Few Hollywood stars can truly claim to be in an echelon above the renowned A-list, but George Clooney has effortlessly risen to such heights. Renowned not only for his chiseled jawline & riveting performances—cue the gripping visual masterpiece Gravity, which amassed an astronomical $723 million at the box office—Clooney embodies the epitome of a real hero.
But did you know that even his highest-grossing movie, the breathtaking outer space odyssey Gravity, would be overshadowed by the sheer opulence of Clooney’s Lake Como villa? Indeed, the star’s phenomenal movie success pales in comparison to the whopping $107 million of his Italian retreat (the Italian house, Villa Oleandra).
However, there were rumors circulating last year that the actor was selling the renowned villa Oleandra, which he later denied.
George Clooney’s Mansion: A Price Comparison to His Blockbuster Film Gravity
Science fiction films set in space seem to have gained a lot of traction in the first half of the 2010s, with films like Gravity, Interstellar, and The Martian becoming huge hits on Earth. The first movie, which starred Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, was a big hit and took home seven Oscars, including Best Director.
The 2013 science fiction thriller directed by Alfonso Cuaron stars Clooney and Bullock as two astronauts who attempt to return to Earth after their spacecraft is destroyed in orbit. With a global gross of more than $723 million and a production budget of approximately $100 million, Gravity emerged as the eighth highest-grossing movie of the year (Box Office Mojo).
Amazingly, though, the production costs were only slightly more than Clooney’s Lake Como villa in Northern Italy, which he reportedly listed for an incredible $107 million last year, according to Page Six.
There have been rumors that Clooney is selling his Lake Como estate. Rumors of the sale, according to the outlet, date back to 2010, when he was allegedly thinking about selling because of the attention he was getting from local paparazzi.
Aside from the jaw-dropping price tag, Clooney’s Lake Como villa holds a special place in his heart for various reasons. According to Architectural Digest, the star first purchased Villa Oleandra from the Heinz family in 2002. Since then, celebrities like Meghan Markle, Prince Harry, Jennifer Aniston, and Matt Damon have been guests of the actor.
The mansion is reportedly where Clooney—who earlier this month celebrated his 63rd birthday— first met his wife, Amal Alamuddin, at a dinner party. According to Architectural Digest, the couple owns a number of properties together, including a villa in Studio City, Los Angeles, a house on the English island of Sonning Eye on the Thames, a Manhattan condo, and a French estate.
George Clooney’s Lake Como Villa on Sale: Fact or Fiction?
Was George Clooney bidding adieu to his long-standing Lake Como property? He would disagree, though. People was informed by the Ocean’s Eleven star that there is no truth to any rumors of a sale:
The first I heard of it was when Page Six published the story. Everyone picked it up. It’s not true.
Given that the Oscar-winning actor had no intention of selling it, what gave rise to those rumors?
According to a source close to Clooney, who first revealed the details to Page Six, the villa was listed for an incredible $107 million, or nearly ten times the $10 million Clooney paid for the property back in 2002. The source shared:
It’s very quiet. No advertising. No press—just high net worth [prospective buyers].
Yasemin Baysal, a real estate agent, then informed Italy’s Oggi magazine that Clooney was undoubtedly selling his property of more than two decades:
Rumors were also circulating in past years, but this time it’s true. An agency in Milan is following the sale. I can’t reveal which one. Since we have a certain type of clientele, someone has already called us. In particular, one customer is very interested. We have started all the necessary checks before submitting a possible offer.
Homes in the upscale waterfront villages around Lake Como are selling for twice as much as landlocked properties in the area, according to The Wall Street Journal. This is primarily because single-family homes on the immaculate lake’s shore rarely come up for sale.
So, if and when Clooney decides to sell his renowned villa, we should probably anticipate a bidding war, regardless of the asking price!
Gravity can be rented on Apple TV.
