The epic saga of Westeros featured in the HBO series Game of Thrones has left a remarkable mark in television history. The series, which ran for 8 seasons, introduced several intriguing characters. The HBO fantasy drama has never shied away from brutally killing some of the fan-favorite characters, and it is also considered to be the reason it’s known as one of the best TV shows of all time.
While some characters managed to make it to the end, others were not very fortunate. However, for some of the fans, the show took a sharp turn when some of the key characters met their demise. And these fans recently took to Reddit some of the characters’ death they believe shouldn’t have died.
Game of Thrones Characters Fans Believe Shouldn’t Have Died
The HBO series Game of Thrones features some harrowing deaths, whether it’s the killing of a character that was set up as the primary protagonist in the very first season or the brutal event of Red Wedding, which saw the deaths of dozens of minor and major characters. One curious Reddit user recently shared a post asking the fans of the show which Game of Thrones character they wished shouldn’t have died, and they had plenty of names.
Jaime Lannister
Portrayed by the Danish actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Jaime Lannister has been one of the most complex and controversial characters of the series. Introduced in the first season of the show, he meets his demise in season eight’s fifth episode, as the Lannister twins die embracing each other amid Daenerys’s rampage.
However, fans have shared that they wished the character had survived the fatal events, as they have grown fond of the character over the years. One user said, “I grew pretty fond of Jaime; even if he was terrible at the beginning, he had legitimate growth towards the end.” However, some seemed content with the way things ended for him, stating that he died only a few episodes before the show ended.
Robb Stark
The eldest son of Lord Eddard Stark and Lady Catelyn, Robb Stark, became the Red Wedding massacre. Richard Madden portrayed the character, and fans have deemed him “the best Stark.” The character rises to take the lead in the Stark family after Ned Stark’s death in the first season. However, his Westeros journey comes to an end after he is shot multiple times by crossbow fire and killed off by Roose Bolton.
Fans, however, believe that there could have been more to his story as they stated that his arc seemed unfinished. “It’s such a bleak ending to their already trepidatious stories,” one Reddit user said, referring to Robb and Catelyn.
Oberyn Martell
Oberyn Martell’s (Pedro Pascal) death is no doubt one of the most horrifying in the HBO fantasy drama. Introduced in Season 4, the character soon meets his demise, literally at the hands of Gregor Clegane, aka The Mountain. The duel with the notorious knight does not end well for Oberyn, who demands Clegane admit to r*ping and killing Elia and her children before The Mountain punches his teeth out and crushes his head.
Fans of the series have shared how the character’s death impacted the whole series as they stated, “Everything went south after he died.” Pascal’s character also seemed the most popular character among fans, as they believed that his death triggered Ellaria to assassinate Myrcella, which later led Cersei to blow up the Great Sept.
The unpredictable nature of life and death in the series is one of the most appealing things about Game of Thrones. However, some of the events in the series have left fans devastated. Whether these characters’ demise really ruined the show is a matter of personal opinion, but these events certainly impacted the series in one or the other way. No matter what, fans still believe it to be one of the greatest TV shows.
