Hollywood appears to have a terrible film history in the 80s and 90s in comparison to today’s culture. Most films that were released in those eras seemed to be filled with whitewashing, racism, and even gender stereotypes. But what’s shocking is that one of Jim Carrey’s 1994 movies appears insanely transphobic.
It’s none other than the 1994 film Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, which now appears to be transphobic in many ways. Even radio host Joe Rogan believes that the movie has certain issues that aren’t fit for today’s culture. Speaking with New York Times opinion writer and editor Bari Weiss, Rogan expressed his concern about the film.
Joe Rogan Addressed Jim Carrey’s 1994 Film
Known for his comedic timing and the hilarious faces that he makes in his movies, Jim Carrey is considered one of the finest Hollywood actors/comedians. Famous for his 1994 film The Mask, Carrey initially rose to fame for another 1994 movie that was released prior to his eccentric green-skinned superhero role.
Yes, we’re talking about Jim Carrey‘s 1994 mystery comedy Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. While the film undoubtedly catapulted Carrey to stardom, it came at the cost of negative reviews. Apparently, with respect to today’s culture, the film dealt with the problematic aspect of showing a transgender character as the villain.
Even UFC commentator Joe Rogan claimed how transphobic the film is. During his conversation with New York Times opinion writer and editor Bari Weiss, which aired in January 2019, Rogan addressed Jim Carrey’s 1994 movie Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and mentioned the mistake he made by watching the movie with his kids.
Joe Rogan Found Ace Ventura: Pet Detective Transphobic
Discussing with Bari Weiss, Joe Rogan claimed that the rumors about Ace Ventura: Pet Detective were indeed true, for even he found the movie extremely transphobic while watching with his kids. Confessing that he made the mistake of exposing his children to such a film, Rogan shared his opinion during the podcast.
“Do you know what I made the mistake of doing yesterday? I watched Ace Ventura: Pet Detective with my 8-year-old and my 10-year-old. I didn’t realize how transphobic that f*cking movie is.”
Steering the conversation towards controversial films, Joe Rogan admitted that Jim Carrey’s 1994 movie is brutally transphobic. Summing up the plot twist Rogan discussed how a cisgender woman Sean Young, who was initially a detective, turned out to be the villain of the movie. Not only that but she was later stripped down to her underwear in front of police officers.
“All the cops are throwing up… It’s off the charts. Everyone is freaking out. It is so insanely transphobic.”
Questioning Bari Weiss who was conservative about the film, Joe Rogan asked her if she thinks the movie should be banned. “Of course not,” she replied. Further adding, “When I saw that movie, I was 10. Transphobia was not a thing. Now it is a thing. That’s good. That’s good news”.
Agreeing with Weiss’ point, Rogan added that probably the film shouldn’t be banned, because it can show how normative those attitudes used to be, and how people have now progressed.
