Who Nicholas Hoult Looks Up To
Nicholas Hoult’s acting journey began as early as the age of three, setting him on a path where mastery of the craft became second nature. Yet, amidst his undeniable expertise, fans have long been eager to find out the sources of his inspiration in the acting world. During his visit to Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast, Hoult finally uncovered this mystery.
Sharing some of his timeless idols from when he first dipped his toes into acting, he revealed names such as Christian Bale’s brooding Batman to his X-Men buddies Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy. These stars remain Hoult’s ultimate inspirations. Here is what he had to say,
“Christian Bale is definitely way up there, and then I was lucky, you know. I guess when we were doing X-Men, I was early 20s when I started, and I was watching and looking up to James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, and they were two of my idols at that point and still are, so it’s like watching those guys being on set with them, is like, ‘Oh, great!'”
For many actors, just being in the same room as their idols is a distant dream, let alone working alongside them. Hoult, however, considers himself incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to not only work with his idols but also to learn from them at such a young age. This revelation undoubtedly stirred excitement among fans, leaving them eager to dive into behind-the-scenes footage from the X-Men franchise.
Nicholas Hoult’s Inspiration Behind His Upcoming Role as Lex Luthor
As Nicholas Hoult gears up to step into the shoes of Lex Luthor in the upcoming James Gunn Universe DC film, Superman, he revealed how much Michael Rosenbaum’s portrayal of the character on Smallville years ago is helping him. In a candid moment, Hoult shared how Rosenbaum’s interpretation not only resonated with him but also served as an influence for his own approach to the role. He said,
“I grew up. I think the first ever Lex I saw was you,–Yeah, I grew up when Smallville was on, I can’t remember if it was Channel 4 or Channel 5 in the UK, but like growing up. I was like 11, 12, I guess. And so that was like the show that I would watch and see my first iterations of Superman and Lex and all those stories. Since I’ve seen Richard Donner’s movies and all the other ones and kind of seen some of the other performances, but you’re like the one. I love [your portrayal], it’s the best.”
Indeed, it’s undeniable that Rosenbaum’s portrayal of the character, honed over a decade, remains the gold standard in the eyes of fans. Consequently, Hoult finds himself under considerable pressure to leave his mark. However, despite the weight of expectations, fans have been pretty excited to see his interpretation of the iconic role.
And speaking on how he has been prepping for the role although it is very early in the process, he said,
“I have been working out. No, you know what, there’s that bit in All-Star Superman where he talks about his muscles being real and like hard work and all that. I kind of took that as a little bit of like fuel for the fire.”
It was truly fascinating to witness the conversation between the two Lex Luthors as they delved into the intricacies of the character. Fans can not wait to see what Hoult has up his sleeves.
Superman is set to be released on July 11, 2025.
