In the 2024 Royal Rumble matches held on Saturday, Cody Rhodes and Bayley won the men’s and women’s matches. Roman Reigns retained the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship after defeating Randy Orton, LA Knight, and AJ Styles in a fatal four-way match. In the other Royal Rumble match, Logan Paul defeated Kevin Owens to retain the WWE United States Championship.

As the 15th entrant in the match, Rhodes eliminated CM Punk to become only the fourth wrestler in Royal Rumble history to win back-to-back matches. Moreover, Rhodes’ record came after two decades since “Stone Cold” Steve Austin won the matches in 1997 and 1998. Other consecutive winners include Hulk Hogan, who won in 1990 and 1991, and Shawn Michaels, in 1995 and 1996.

Rhodes was elated to join this list of legendary wrestlers as he shared in the post-show press conference. He revealed that the record stat was special to him, as he didn’t have a lot of stats to boast about. Rhodes shared that he was very blessed and lucky to be in the mix with Hulk Hogan, who “helped put WWE on the map”, Shawn Michaels, his “personal favorite”, and Steve Austin, “the most prosperous and profitable sports entertainer”. Rhodes shared in the press conference:

“To be listed with guys like that, Hulk Hogan, who helped put WWE on the map, Shawn Michaels, my personal favorite as a kid. When I was a kid, being a Shawn fan wasn’t that easy. He had chaps, fingerless gloves, it’s a choice, you know, but I was into Shawn Michaels. Then ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin, who is the most prosperous and profitable sports entertainer there ever was. So to be able to say I’m in that mix, it makes me very happy, and I’m very blessed, very lucky to be in this spot.”

Interestingly, Steve Austin holds the record for the most victories at three. The face of WWE, John Cena, also won the Royal Rumble twice, but not back-to-back, winning in 2008 and 2013. Other wrestlers like Batista, Triple H, Randy Orton, Edge, and Brock Lesnar are all two-time Royal Rumble winners.

One of the viral moments from Cody Rhodes’ win at the Royal Rumble was the disappointed look on Roman Reigns’ face (via @WrestleOps). Rhodes pointed to Reigns after his win, a clear indication that he would pick Roman Reigns for a title match at the upcoming WrestleMania 40.

Rhodes has to “finish his story” after Reigns defeated him in their last ring match at WrestleMania 39. When asked if he was challenging Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40, Rhodes shared in the press conference:

“I feel like everyone knew that. I’m very glad that he decided to take the skybox seat because we could make it clear where we’re at. All the respect in the world to Seth Rollins. That title gains more prestige every single day. But WrestleMania 39 did happen. If you’re me, you can’t look at that, and you can’t run from it. I want to be back in the back in the ring with Roman Reigns, and I want to finish the story.”

Roman Reigns was looking forward to an exciting WrestleMania match between him and his cousin, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. With Rhodes in the picture, Reigns will have to take a longer and riskier route to take on The Rock. His dream match may never happen if Rhodes gets to finish his story and defeat him in the title match.
