When you’re sharing the screen with Lady Gaga, things are bound to get weird, but this took ‘wild experience’ to a whole new level. Far from the superhero antics of the DC universe, this moment was a dark dive into the surreal, and it’s one that’s likely to haunt him for years to come.

“Ever since the bloody orgy I did with Lady Gaga, everything’s pretty tame after that.” Yep, that’s Matt Bomer reflecting on one of the wildest experiences of his career—and it’s just as crazy as it sounds.

The Maestro actor Bomer is making a bloody splash again as he returns to American Horror Story, but this time, nothing can quite compare to the blood-soaked chaos he faced with Lady Gaga during AHS: Hotel. In that unforgettable episode, Bomer’s Donovan and Gaga’s Countess lured a couple into a brutal, blood-drenched orgy. The scene? As intense as you’d expect—wrapped like ‘sardines in a tarp’ between takes and drenched from head to toe in blood. In an interview with the New York Post, the Doom Patrol star shared:

Honestly, I feel that ever since the blood orgy I did with Lady Gaga, everything is pretty tame after that. I was head to toe Carrie prom scene-esque levels of blood. They basically wrapped us up like sardines in a tarp in between takes of that [scene].

It was Gaga and I, and these two wonderful actors who we’d just met 10 minutes before, lying on a tarp next to each other sandwiched in. And they’d peel the tarp off and we’d do the next take. It was very strange. So after that, any amount of corn syrup [for fake blood] is pretty tame. That was a wild experience. It was certainly memorable.

But Bomer’s latest return ain’t just about reminiscing. He’s back for American Horror Stories, the AHS spin-off, and he’s ready to face more psychological (and literal) horrors. This time, he stars in the two-part premiere, Rubber (WO)man Part One, where his character Michael and his family move into a haunted L.A. mansion for ghost-themed retreats. While Bomer admits the new season gets bloody, nothing’s quite matched that Gaga experience.

Now, with Bomer back on AHS turf, fans can expect new horrors—but he’s already survived the wildest one with Gaga at his side.

Matt Bomer Reveals How Being Gay May Have Cost Him the Role of Superman

Matt Bomer’s opening up about the role that got away—and why he believes his sexuality may have been the reason. The White Collar star revealed on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast that he was the ‘director’s choice’ for the since-shelved Superman: Flyby in 2002 but didn’t land the part. Referring to his sexual orientation, he alluded:

I went in on a cattle call for Superman, and then it turned into a one-month audition experience where I was auditioning repeatedly, but it never came to light. That was a time in the industry when something like that could still really be weaponized against you. How, and why, and who, I don’t know, but yeah, that’s my understanding.

Despite being the frontrunner during Brett Ratner’s run as director, the project never materialized. By 2006, Superman Returns had taken shape, with Bryan Singer at the helm and Brandon Routh donning the cape.

Fortunately, things turned around for Bomer when he scored the lead in White Collar, and since then, he’s been thriving. Now, with a thriving career and a beautiful family, Bomer’s proudest role is far from any superhero costume.
