Much of Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece is centered on Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat Pirate crew going on a fantastical adventure on the Grand Line. However, the Shonen series does not focus primarily on its main characters, as over its long run, Oda-Sensei has featured several mysteries around its characters.

One of the most sought-after mysteries revolving around the anime and manga series is The Will of D. The characters with these initials are notorious figures tirelessly hunted by the Marines. While characters like Ace, Dragon, Garp, Saul, and many more flaunt the letter in their names, Trafalgar D. Water Law prefers to hide the letter from his name.
Though fans initially assumed that he preferred to have negligent attention and did not want the Marine on his tail, it turns out that he prefers to hide the letter for a very different reason.
Trafalgar D. Water Law Reveals Why He Hides ‘D’ in His Name
Since 1995, Eiichiro Oda has hooked his audience with a complex narrative in his vast and imaginative world built on the sea. The series’ allure is not merely its characters and gripping storylines with jaw-dropping fight scenes animated to perfection.

However, it is the mysteries that shroud the show, piquing the interest of the fans and compelling them to theorize the mysteries that lie in the Grand Line. There are a ton of paradoxes, but one of them has taken the fandom by storm. The Will of D stands tall as a mystery that has remained in secrecy.
With over 1100 episodes in the anime and not a single hint of the mysterious middle name. However, according to Donquixote Rosinante, the “D.”s are considered to be the natural enemies of the gods, being the rulers, whom we call the Celestial Dragons. Moreover, people with these initials bring great catastrophe with them.

However, we learned that people with initials preferred to hide them. In the show, we have seen that the three names from The Worst Generation are the carriers of the Will of D; and Trafalgar D. Water Law is one of them, a survivor of Flevance.
The Captain of the Heart Pirates preferred to hide the name in the show, and when he first revealed it to Luffy, it came as a shock. However, later, he explains why he kept it a secret. A fan (@newworldartur) shared a panel from the manga on social media, where Law said that he is not supposed to tell that name to anyone.
Furthermore, the fan theorized “because it seems the D. clan were actually being persecuted and killed for their names alone.” This made the One Piece fans go nuts on social media and decide to share their take on the theory.
One Piece Fans React to Law’s Tragic Reason to Hide His Initials
Chapter #1085 of the manga decided to shed some light on the middle name, where Imu stated that the “‘D’ is the moniker of our ancient enemy.” Hence, anyone bearing that name is their enemy.

Hence, anyone who had the initial in their name was hunted and killed by the World Government. As a result, only limited characters such as Monkey D. Luffy, Monkey D. Dragon, and Marshall D. Teach openly use it with their names. Fans decided to share their opinion in the comment section of the post.
We've seen many people mention they are a D with no repercussions. Could be a prejudice that dulled over the years so only older people experienced it.

Wonder if we'll eventually find out Garp had to hide his real name back when he was just starting up in the marines, and was only not punished when it was revealed because of his hero status.

Kinda interesting the only characters openly part of the D clan are under the government, or part of a notorious pirate crew

People often forgot that the only characters who openly have D in their names Pre-Timeskip are Luffy, Ace, Garp, Saul, and Blackbeard. Everybody else is either dead or hid their names

There are Garp and Saul that works (or used to) for the Marines and then Rouge that was probably just living her life until she met Roger.

I guess they were people directly connected to the CDs, aince Cora mentioned that Doffy would kill Law if he discovered.
Makes you wonder why the Monkey D., Jaguar D. And Portgas D. families haven't faced any major persecution.

Eiichiro Oda has still not unraveled the secret following the initials, but that has not stopped the fans from coming up with their own theories.
However, one thing is certain: when Oda-Sensei reveals the secret, the otaku community will go nuts.
One Piece can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
