Fans have been treated to many versions of dystopian worlds where soldiers are caught in a battle against time (and some hella formidable foes). No wonder when Alex Garland’s Civil War was announced, there was a lot of noise going around that it would be just some more of that action.
How wrong were we though? The Kirsten Dunst starrer has proved its mettle over its weekend run. The movie has won fans over, collecting over $25 million at the domestic box office. And on the way to its successful opening week, it has managed to break a rather big record as well.
Civil War has intrigued fans left, right and center
The Alex Garland directorial has created an emotion of awe and intrigue in the minds of fans. They have all been drawn towards the story – and how it will play out in the end. And its been some time since a dystopian tale managed to pique fans’ interests after all.
The story revolves around journalists who have taken up arms (surprise! surprise!) and are on their way to Washington DC to fend off rebel factions who are striving to rain hell upon the White House (and the USA). it has evoked a lot of feelings amongst the fans, some good, and some bad. But that is not something which A24, the studio behind the movie, will mind after all.
Alex Garland’s Civil War manages to break a big record
The hype created around the 2024 flick has translated into a stellar run on the box office. The movie has now debuted with $25.7 million at the domestic box office, this year’s highest opening so far. It might not sit at the pole position for long, but one needs to remember that on the way to its successful haul, it has taken down the likes of Dune: Part Two and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
That is quite the achievement to say the least. But this is not the only major record it has broken.
Civil War’s box office collection makes it A24’s best opening, ever. Director Alex Garland has delivered the goods yet again, marking a memorable moment in the history of the New York based specialty studio.
Fans hail Civil War on the Internet
The Nick Offerman starrer overtakes Hereditary, that had hit the theatres in 2018, to become A24’s biggest debut. And not only this, it is the first time an A24 movie is leading the charts in North America.

One fan even went on to call it better than Dune: Part Two.
Alamo Drafthouse theaters don’t seat the large crowds, but all the shows Friday and Saturday were sold out at my local.
Go see it, best movie of 2024 so far. Better than Dune, I said it. More emotional impact.
