In Elden Ring, multiple locations, items, and characters bear a resemblance to older games by FromSoftware. For the most part, these are welcome callbacks and treat players to a dose of fan service. However, these also include experiences that have always stayed a bit tricky, sometimes even asking players to break their heads over them.

One such location in the game almost takes everything about these games that players hate and ties it up into a sweet experience worthy of asking you to quit and never look back. Beyond swampy regions and places that cause Scarlet Rot, there is one location in particular that might be the reason for your next series of nightmares.

Welcome to the Sewers in Leyndell, the Most Confusing Place in the Lands Between

The Royal Capital in Elden Ring is home to luxurious stories of fallen kings, forgotten soldiers, and hundreds of tales of mystery and epicness. However, it also nestles one of the most convoluted pieces of level design in the game, called Subterranean Shunning-Grounds. It may sound horrifying (and it is), but there’s more to it than what players initially expect.

In a recent Reddit post, user lixm6988 asked the community about their worst encounters in the game. As expected, one of the top comments blatantly calls out Leyndell Sewers as a promising contender for confusing pathways, unexpected trouble, and a devastating form of level design.

This underground part of the otherwise astonishing city holds quite a few bosses, items, and other things to discover. If you choose to set foot into the sewers, be prepared to meet the likes of Mohg, the Omen, and Esgar, the Priest of Blood. To be fair, these aren’t even the actual challenges here. What’s going to break your spirit are the annoying imps sitting on ledges and massive ogres roaming around like they mean business.

Furthermore, pipes and ladders are a few of the things that might give you a sense of direction – until you lose your way again. The silver lining here is that there are a couple of Sites of Grace throughout this place to make sure you’re not utterly and completely giving up on the game anytime soon.

Elden Ring Isn’t the First to Have Such Confusing Spots in a Game

Terrifying bosses, weird corners, and interesting loot. The place has it all.
Terrifying bosses, weird corners, and interesting loot. The place has it all.

Previously, multiple entries in the FromSoftware legacy have had entire sections built by someone who was having a terrible day at work. Seriously, some of these places might as well be removed from the game, and the player base would be much, much happier.

The Dark Souls games have places like Irithyll Dungeon and Blighttown, some of the most terrifying experiences given how these games were already dark and challenging enough. These spots in the game were made of ongoing terror and enemies hiding at every other corner. Either way, if not enemies, you’d likely lose your sense of direction trying to navigate these places.

In retrospect, would Elden Ring (or other games, for that matter) be better off without these locations? Maybe not. After all, it’s the charm of challenges that drives these games, and these locations simply add to the mix. A map that actually works would have been nicer, but most of us knew what we were signing up for.
