The American satirical comedy-drama TV series Succession made a great buzz among the audience. Indeed, the series was worth the hype as the series received widespread recognition and acclaim throughout its tenure. However, while the series was in its developing stage, the writers had many second thoughts on the premise of the series.
A news outlet shared an insight on the writer’s perspective of Succession‘s various seasons and what were their expectations from it. One of the writers of the series talked about one of the most disturbing episodes of the series, which was actually taken positively by the viewers.
Succession’s writers were nervous about one of its most disturbing episode
Succession is a dark comedy series, that revolves around the lives of members of the Roy family. The family is led by the patriarch Logan Roy who is an evil and narcissistic person, whose primary focus in life is his company. When he experiences a decline in his health, the true politics starts between his children to get control. There are four seasons encompassing various episodes that get intriguing at every step.
However, there is one episode for which even the creators had doubts. In episode 3 of season 2, titled Hunting, certain scenes hold the potential to give the viewers a bone-chilling experience.
According to one of the writers of Succession, Jon Brown, (via The Guardian), the show’s creators were nervous while developing the episode as it deals with some disturbing and intense scenes. He said,
“We were quite nervous because we hadn’t done an episode like it before; we were worried it might feel a bit overblown and heightened compared to how real and closely observed other parts of the show are. But Brian did a phenomenal job and made it feel very real. Everyone on set was terrified.”
However, when the episode aired, the show did a tremendous job, thanks to Brian Cox’s impeccable acting skills.
Jon Brown claimed the Succession’s episode to be appalling
While discussing season 2’s episode three ‘Hunting’, Jon Brown shared that when his friend watched the episode, he was terrified. Brown said,
“A friend watched Hunting, the ‘Boar on the Floor’ episode (a.k.a Hunting), recently and said it made them want to crawl out of their own skin.”
In episode three of the series, Logan’s character (played by Brian Cox) takes an even more evil turn as he mentally torments the members of the Roy family during a hunting trip. Brown reflected on the vision of the creators regarding the episode, and said,
“We went through our list of corporate things that the characters could do, and decided they could do a hunting trip –. Jesse liked this idea of Logan keeping his closest allies around him, with the pretense of camaraderie and having a good time, but actually torturing and bullying them psychologically – being paranoid himself, but also fostering that atmosphere of paranoia around him.”
The episode highlights the grotesque relationship between the characters and to which extent they can go to get the control and power of the company.
