Led by Swen Vincke, the team brought Dungeons and Dragons to the mainstream in a masterful way.

And the Fallout director suggests that its success didn’t come out of nowhere, given the developer’s previous track record.

Todd Howard was quite confident in Bethesda’s supposed magnum opus Starfield, but while Swen Vincke and Larian were trying to avoid such a behemoth release for Baldur’s Gate 3, bringing its PC launch back a month in 2023, the gaming industry threw in a plot twist.

Larian launched its game’s PS5 version on the same day as Bethesda’s title, but Howard’s Starfield was drastically overshadowed by Vincke’s smaller studio. “Deserve it, great studio,” answered the Fallout director during an interview when asked about his reaction to Baldur’s Gate 3‘s success.

Todd Howard went on to state that he has witnessed Larian do incredible work for “a long time,” continuing that he disagrees with the people in the industry who think of the developer’s triumph as an “overnight success.” The Bethesda executive producer asked, “Have you played their previous games?” implying that Larian’s talent has always been present in its titles before Baldur’s Gate 3 came out.

The Fallout director thinks the studio did a “tremendous job” with its critically acclaimed title, but there is more to appreciate and learn from a developer like Larian.

Todd Howard does not just limit Larian Studios’ success to Baldur’s Gate 3, stating that while the game is an amazing “product,” it is how the developer goes about its work that is truly applaudable. One can tell how dedicated Swen Vincke’s team is and how much passion it puts into its games, and it comes through in the way its developers “talk about it.”

The Fallout director was also asked if there was anything specific in Baldur’s Gate 3 that inspired him to modify his own upcoming video games, to which he said that Bethesda looks “at all games” for inspiration.

I don’t want to pinpoint particularly that one,” stated Todd Howard, referring to Baldur’s Gate 3 when it comes to what inspires him to create great gaming experiences, as Bethesda takes notes from various titles to see if it can make certain improvements in its own games.
