In March 2022, Steve Asbell of 20th Century Studios revealed that there is an in-progress script for the potential sequel. “We’re awaiting a script that is days away,” he told The Hollywood Reporter, although no production or release date was confirmed at the time.

Ryan Reynolds Believes Not Everything Needs To Have A Sequel

During the interview, Ryan Reynolds was asked if there is a brewing second installment of Free Guy, to which he answered (via Variety):

There is the potential to do a sequel to ‘Free Guy,’ which would be fun. I would love it. But also like, does everything fucking have to be a sequel? I don’t know. Sometimes it’s OK to just do a movie and have it kick ass and then everyone go home.”

The actor noted that there was some kind of “push and pull” in the decision to make the sequel. He added:

There’s a bit of a push and pull there, resisting the urge to just immediately say, ‘Oh, doing a sequel will validate the first one. No, the first movie validates the first one, and then you can leave it at that. So I don’t know, we’re still talking about it.”

While there is no confirmation of anything yet, regarding the rumored Free Guy sequel, 20th Century Studios may be planning multiple installments for the action-comedy franchise. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Asbell shared:

We’re navigating the marketplace like everyone else. There are movies like Avatar, Planet of the Apes, and now Free Guy that have well-established theatrical precedence for a wide audience… We have more Avatar movies coming, we have more Free Guy movies coming. We’re going to be pretty busy.”

Asbell noted that they will “evaluate these decisions film by film” by looking at the marketplace standing and making predictions as well. After Free Guy was released in August 2021, Reynolds revealed that Disney requested at least one more film. More recently, director Shawn Levy has reportedly been speaking with Disney regarding a Free Guy sequel project.
