The early 2000s were an interesting time for zombie media, whether it be the remake of the 1978 classic that saw Snyder’s debut, to Simon Pegg’s more comedic approach to it with Shaun of the Dead. While not everything released at the time stuck to the wall, one of the more impressive films to come out from this genre was Cillian Murphy’s 28 Days Later, which is long due for a new sequel.
From the iconic beginning in a vacant London to some impeccable performances from everyone involved, which pushed Murphy to the limelight, the franchise is finally set to be rejuvenated. With Sony acquiring the rights, a pair of sequels are now on the cards, but Murphy’s return to screen remains in question.
Sony Is Yet to Disclose Information on Whether Cillian Murphy Will Reprise His Part or Not
While the original team from 28 Days Later has rejoined forces, including writer Alex Garland and director Danny Boyle, who didn’t helm the sequel 28 weeks later, a third installment is finally on its way. But with Sony securing rights after a protracted bidding war (per THR), the biggest question remains on Cillian Murphy‘s return as Jim in the zombie-infested world.
While the Golden Globe winner will be serving as an executive producer for the film, it hasn’t been confirmed if he’ll act in it or not, even though possibilities are high following the actor’s recent success.
No Objections on Cillian Murphy’s Part
Although details are currently quarantined about the cast, following Cillian Murphy’s previous statements prior to its confirmation, it’s pretty likely he would be up to reprise his part onscreen. Having been vocal about his love for Garland and Boyle’s work that landed him notable success pretty early in his career, Cillian Murphy stressed that he’d be down for a sequel if asked to return.
Reflecting on the possibility of 28 Years Later before its confirmation, he told The Independent:
“That’s great to hear. I didn’t know that – I would be there in a flash. I made two movies with both of those guys, and I would love to work with them again. Of course, I’m there.”
With Murphy seemingly up to return to his role, it’ll be unlikely on Sony’s part if they don’t consider having the actor lead the film, especially since he is a likely candidate to win the Oscar this year. But while the duo of Boyle and Garland are set to helm 28 Years Later, Boyle has no intentions of returning for the second planned film, whose story will also be penned by Garland.
