Insomniac’s latest release, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, has been the fastest-selling first-party PlayStation title and one of the best-selling PlayStation 5 games ever. It had been nominated for the Ultimate Game of the Year category but couldn’t secure the title at the Golden Joystick Awards.
Baldur’s Gate 3 stepped up to seal the win in the Ultimate Game of The Year category and bagged the most awards at the event. The Game Awards also list the game in many categories on their website. Now, a report in 2021 mentioned a rumor that a new multiplayer game that was Marvel-related was in the works. The community has been speculating on the plausibility of the rumor recently on Reddit.
Will Insomniac’s Next Game Also Be About a Marvel IP?
As per this post on the subreddit r/GamingLeaksAndRumours, the report by Comicbook.com has been mentioned and is being discussed. As per the post, the upcoming game in development by Insomniac will also be a PS5 exclusive akin to the Marvel’s Spider-Man series and Marvel’s Wolverine.
The rumor came up when XboxEra’s Nick Baker discussed it on the XboxEra Podcast. He mentions that a source told him that Marvel and Sony’s alliance will continue.
And a multiplayer Marvel game is allegedly in the works that will probably be a PS5 exclusive. Whether the studio behind the game will be Insomniac or not is just speculation at this point. But given the trends, betting on Insomniac might not be the worst idea in the world. It isn’t highly unlikely. Insomniac also posted a job opening on Twitter, which was in regards to a multiplayer game.
Baker also admitted that he had more information regarding this but couldn’t go ahead to share it. They also confirmed this on an interview with Full Sail University. All of this confirms that Insomniac is confirmed to have been working on a multiplayer game.
Based on Nick Baker’s rumors, a Multiplayer Marvel game is also developing. Combining the confirmation with the alleged report by the source revealed to Nick Baker. One could hope to see Insomniac’s next multiplayer game actually being about a Marvel IP.
What Could Be This Next Multiplayer Marvel Game by Insomniac?
The possibilities could be a lot for Insomniac. Mainly known for working on IPs associated with Marvel. They have established some notable IPs in the past. This includes the likes of Ratchet and Clank. Spyro the Dragon,
Another game by the studio that was celebrated was Sunset Overdrive. Nick Baker is known to have given accurate information in the past.
It could be that this time is also a charm for the podcaster, and the supposed leak from the lone source is actually true. But on the off chance, it may not be true ultimately. That is, if a Marvel multiplayer game is released but not by Insomniac. Or one isn’t released at all? Only time will tell.
All we know right now is that Insomniac is working on a multiplayer game. If the studio were to go down the Marvel path, then there are multiple avenues to be discovered.
We could be in for a full-fledged Marvel gaming universe exclusively for PS5. We know that Marvel’s Wolverine is coming, as it has been announced. Also, there are speculations of Daredevil appearing somewhere in Insomniac’s Marvel universe. The easter eggs and other information about the matter seem to make sense.
This means that two characters are confirmed, and the other may arrive as suggested by easter eggs and Bryan Inithar asking fans to “stay tuned” on the matter.
If one lets their mind wander free, the possibilities can be numerous, but it will be interesting to see which way the studio chooses. At the same time, Insomniac Games has been a competent studio by itself even before being acquired by Sony. It would be fantastic if the studio also released some non-Marvel-related titles. That would ensure the studio isn’t typecasted. And Insomniac’s original IPs will also get some effort from the studio, even if not all of it.
