Despite being an action RPG title, Black Myth: Wukong is yet another exciting addition to Soulslike games, which to some degree follow the classic FromSoftware formula. However, the game has managed to bring one feature, which Hidetaka Miyazaki and his team need to steal in a completely different way.

The Soulslike genre has gone through tons of iterations and evolutions over the past decade, with many AAA games and indie teams putting their own spin on it. However, we’ve never seen anything like Black Myth: Wukong before, which plans to completely revolutionize the genre from the ground up.

Based on what we’ve seen so far, Game Science has brought various never-seen-before game mechanics and features for their upcoming game. One of these features is related to the game’s boss fights. Unlike other Soulslike games out there, certain bosses in Black Myth: Wukong will only enter into their second phase if you defeat them within a certain period.

While it’s quite an interesting mechanic, players are skeptical about its implementation and feel it should be completely the other way around. The time-limit restriction could lead to a lot of gamers completely missing out on a bunch of second phases, which could be crucial to progress in the game.

Such a unique mechanism brings the challenge that Soulslike fans have always dreamt of. The concept has incredible potential and can certainly raise the stakes for everyone.

Despite its appeal, it can be incredibly devastating for players who don’t manage to defeat the boss in their first run and have to keep repeating until they take it down. Whatever FromSoftware’s next title ends up being, Hidetaka Miyazaki could definitely learn from such a feature and bring it in a way that’s not punishing for players.

The official release date was confirmed during The Game Awards 2023, where  Black Myth: Wukong‘s release date was shown with an English dub for the very first time. We have also witnessed several monsters that the Destined One takes on, but compared to the snippets that we previously saw, we didn’t get any new gameplay.

While it’s not a AAA experience, the buzz surrounding this Soulslike title over the years makes it one of the most hyped PC games of 2024.
