In a recent conversation with The Telegraph, Florence Pugh opened up about the unnecessary expectations set for her by the creators of a show she was selected in. The Don’t Worry Darling actress stated that since the show, Studio City, was going to be her first big break, she was extremely happy to be a part of it. She stated that she felt lucky and grateful to get the “top of the game”.  However, things soon turned sour for Pugh.

Pugh stated that not only was she expected to change the way she looked, but she was also expected to do all of it at the young age of nineteen.

“All the things that they were trying to change about me, whether it was my weight, my look, the shape of my face, the shape of my eyebrows, that was so not what I wanted to do, or the industry I wanted to work in.”

She further added that her earlier experience of acting on the sets of The Falling was quite pleasant and she believed that that is exactly what the big film business would be like. Pugh went on to say that she couldn’t have been more wrong as she thought she had made a “massive mistake.”

When the Pilot of the show wasn’t picked up for a series, Pugh returned to her homeland, deflated. She thought that the unpleasant experience was where her journey in the film industry ended. However, in mere two weeks, she landed an audition for Lady Macbeth, and the rest as we know is history.

Pugh stated that the cinema that she fell in love with, all over again, came after Lady Macbeth, one where people can be loud and opinionated. She added that for the well-settled people in Hollywood, pushing newcomers around was way too easy.

“I think it’s far too easy for people in this industry to push you left and right. And I was lucky enough to discover when I was 19 what kind of a performer I wanted to be.”

In a 2018 interview with The Guardian, she opened up about her Studio City experience and stated that it is very easy for Hollywood to mold you into their expectations.

“If you go out not knowing what it is that you’re representing, and you are just a canvas, they will make you into the thing they need you to be.”

While Pugh faced challenges right at the beginning of her career, she has now reached immense heights in Hollywood. She is also an outspoken advocate for herself and the women in the industry.

One such incident is when she donned a sheer, bright pink Valentino gown for a Valentino fashion show in Rome. Of course, she found herself standing at the receiving end of criticism from people, just as she expected. She wasted no time and took to Instagram to clap back at the haters. In the post, she stated that she was proud to grow up in a household of strong, powerful, and curvy women and that she wouldn’t be paying attention to someone else’s opinion on how she should live.

Pugh is setting up some serious girl boss standards as she certainly won’t be up for a debate when it comes to her body and what she wears!
