Amber Heard explained how 2013’s Paranoia crafted a great female lead

While speaking about the character of Emma Jennings in an interview with Vanity Fair, Amber Heard opened up about her reason to star as the character in Paranoia, starring Harrison Ford. The actress explained that oftentimes scenes of female characters, who are playing supporting figures to the male leads are trimmed down during the post-production.

However, in Paranoia, which witnessed a very capable female lead in the form of Emma Jennings, the character didn’t suffer the same fate, as she was no less than the male lead in the movie. Heard explained the situation by stating,

“I kind of wanted to explore that and I also wanted to play a character, that in being intelligent I felt would be had a more likely chance of being protected in the post-production process, where female characters, in particular, tend to be stripped down because why build up the nuance of those characters, when it’s really about them supporting them male characters.”

Amber Heard was thankful to the filmmakers for the treatment of Mera in Aquaman

Following her first big blockbuster, which witnessed Amber Heard in the role of Mera, the actress commended the filmmakers for not making the character another damsel in distress. Heard further explained that even though Jason Momoa’s Aquaman was the main attraction of the movie, that didn’t result in her character taking the backseat in it. She explained her appreciation for the character of Mera by stating,

“And I, for one, felt really thankful that they took that approach to a female protagonist. In her own right, Mera is very much an individual and is a proactive, driving force. I think audiences desire to see women occupy strong roles and she is, in every way, Aquaman’s equal and time and again saves him as much as he saves her.”

But despite her love for the character of Mera, her future as the DC hero is uncertain following the drama surrounding her legal battle against Johnny Depp. And considering that her future in the DC universe might be over, the sequel to Aquaman might be the last time she gets to play the role of Mera onscreen.
