Minecraft has continued to be one of the most popular video games ever made, and now the franchise is gearing up for its big feature-length debut. Jack Black has reportedly joined the cast as Steve, the original character skin for the game.
Not much is known about the movie on its own, but as production slowly gears up, more information regarding the cast is slowly starting to reveal itself. The game has shattered records worldwide and is quite a historic part of the gaming industry. It’s only fair that the upcoming film gets the best treatment possible.
Jack Black Continues His Epic Streak with the Leading Role in Minecraft
Details regarding the film have been quite few and far between, but we do know that Jason Momoa is currently cast in an undisclosed role. Just recently, it was reported by Deadline that Jack Black will be joining the cast, although there is still no word from Warner Bros., the production studio behind the film.
Before this, the only video game-related project that Black has worked on was The Super Mario Bros. Movie, playing the infamous Bowser. We also know that he’s starring in the upcoming Borderlands live-action film. It’s clear that he loves gaming, as not only has he actively proclaimed his love for it, such as on his band Tenacious D’s record, Video Games, he also specifically clearly has a soft spot for Minecraft.
A few years ago, during the franchise’s massive resurgence, the actor played the game with YouTuber PewDiePie. His voice talent is also incredibly recognizable from films like Kung Fu Panda, Ice Age, and, of course, The Super Mario Bros.
It’s clear that Black is the best for the job, especially considering his love for the franchise as well as his talent in general.
What Else is Known About the Film?
So far, the most we’ve gotten from official sources is the cast. As reported, Emma Myers, known for her role in Wednesday; Danielle Brooks, known for Orange is the New Black; and Sebastian Eugene Hansen, will be starring in the film.
Warner Bros. also recently announced that the film is set to hit the big screen on April 4, 2025. But so far, not even writing credits or direction has come up, which has led some to speculate that the film may even be delayed.
Still, there is much to be excited about. The franchise has garnered a well-deserved reputation, and it’s only up from here. Video game adaptations would always stir up massive outrage in the community, but now with projects like The Last of Us, the aforementioned animated Mario film, Cyberpunk Edgerunners, Arcane, and many more, it’s clear that film and TV makers have begun to realize the formula for the ideal adaptation.
According to Deadline, production on the upcoming film is about to get underway. The response to this news has been nothing but positive so far, and many are hoping that the film lives up to the franchise’s name, especially since it means a lot to people.
The game is still the best-selling video game of all time and still has millions of active players worldwide. The recent 1.20 update even brought with it many experimental changes, which players have been testing out and playing around with thoroughly.
It’s only a matter of time before Minecraft takes the spotlight again. So far, the film has been nothing short of homerun after homerun, and the excitement levels are going through the roof. Jack Black is sure to do justice to the role.
