In the 2022 filmĀ Top Gun: Maverick,Ā Powell portrayed the role of Lt. Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin. Although he was a side character, Powell made his on-screen presence noticeable to the people. Taking to social media and the internet, fans now want Powell to replace Tom Cruise in theĀ Top GunĀ franchise as the lead star!
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Powell himself said that there can never be another Tom Cruise or any of the iconic 80s and 90s actors in present times!

Here comes the interesting part. With the box office collection ofĀ Top Gun: MaverickĀ (and how good the film actually is), a third film has been greenlit and the story is in development as we speak. With Powell’s statements and his dedication to Tom Cruise, the third film in the franchise seems impossible without Tom Cruise.
Well, there have been some forms of confirmation that producer Jerry Bruckheimer has given that can be taken with a grain of salt. However, this adds to the fact that the franchise should end with a three-quel!
Top GunĀ Should End With A Banger (And A Third Film)!
InĀ Top Gun: Maverick,Ā we saw Tom Cruise train Rooster (Miles Teller) to become one of the elites at Top Gun. With Glen Powell’sĀ ‘Hangman’ coming in to save the show at the end of the film, it seems that the franchise isn’t done yet.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer was quick to talk about a potential third film in the franchise. With Glen Powell admitting that there can never be another Tom Cruise, Bruckheimer seemed to agree with those statements.
In an interview with ScreenRant, the producer revealed that there’s a story in progress and that Cruise has liked the idea so far.
It will be Tom Cruise. Tom is amazing. We spent time with him. We have a story. [Director] Joe Kosinski had a wonderful story idea for it, and he (Tom Cruise) said I really like that, so weāre developing it.
He further continued,
But you never know when itās going to get made because Tom is so busy. Heās doing Mission: Impossible right now, heās got a picture after it. Hopefully, weāll get a screenplay that he loves, and weāll be back in the air again.
So it seems that a third film will indeed take off pretty soon. However, the film could also mark the end of the Top GunĀ franchise. With other franchises likeĀ Fast & FuriousĀ pushing sequels after sequel, it seems a good idea that Cruise’s franchise should know when to stop.
