Forget Professor X’s telepathy or Magneto’s magnetism—the real power in Deadpool & Wolverine might belong to pajamas. Yes, you read that right. Aaron Stanford, reprising his role as Pyro from the X-Men movies, is finally getting a superhero costume!

For those who haven’t flamed out on X-Men lore, Pyro (remember the fiery dude?) got a raw deal in his previous appearances. Stanford laments,

In the original X-Men films, Pyro gets really shortchanged in terms of a costume. In X2, we start off with Pyro in Xavier’s School for Gifted Mutants. The SWAT team bursts in in the middle of the night and we have to flee. So for half the movie, I’m in my jammies.

I never got the cool leather, tactical suit that all the X-Men wear. And in X3, I was just dressed in an ensemble from Hot Topic, basically. So to have him be in a proper superhero costume that was actually taken from the comics themselves was very cool.

Thankfully, Deadpool & Wolverine rectify this fashion faux pas. Stanford beams, “I was just very happy to even have a costume! This time it’s straight out of the comics, with the iconic goggles – very cool.” This might seem like a minor detail, but for fans of the character, it’s a major win.

After a few box office sputters from Marvel, can this film reignite superhero passion? Director Shawn Levy hopes so. “The anticipation keeps me up at night,” he admits, “but it also pushes us to make this the most epic, hilarious movie ever.”

High stakes indeed. With fans eagerly speculating about cameos (think: Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine meeting a different Wolverine?), Levy assures us the focus remains on the core story. “We didn’t want cameos to overshadow the plot,” he says, “but there are some fun surprises peppered in—a love letter to the X-Men films, if you will.”

Also, do you know what else might get you fired up? Levy “almost” ended up directing The Flash!

Shawn Levy, the mastermind behind the highly-anticipated Deadpool & Wolverine, might be the king of superhero romps now, but it turns out he almost donned a different cape. “I get offered superhero stuff all the time,” Levy admits, “but the story has to resonate with me.” Apparently, the speedster life of The Flash wasn’t his usual stomping ground, per EW.

This might surprise some, considering Levy’s repo for quirky, original movies like Date Night and This Is Where I Leave You. Superhero sequels don’t seem like his jam. So, what drew him to mutants and chimichangas? Deadpool & Wolverine offered a unique story that Levy couldn’t resist.

Speaking of unique, Levy promises to maintain Deadpool’s signature fourth-wall-breaking antics. “There are rules,” co-star Ryan Reynolds clarifies.

Deadpool’s the only one who gets to chat with the audience. Everyone else has to stay grounded in the story, or else the whole thing falls apart.

Hugh Jackman, returning as Wolverine, echoes this sentiment as well.

It seems like Levy’s decision to do away with the speed force for Deadpool’s mouth might be a win-win. And who are we to complain? We’re getting the craziest, funniest superhero team-up ever.

Deadpool & Wolverine releases on July 26, 2024.
