Recently, the internet saw an interesting debate where the Friends fans were asked to choose between Chandler Bing’s dialogues or Ross Geller’s physical comedy. While we all still love the late Matthew Perry and his hilarious take on the Chandler, most fans have agreed that David Schwimmer’s physical comedy in the show deserves more appreciation.

The entire Friends group had their unique reasons to be admirable, something that they will be remembered for. Nonetheless, David Schwimmer‘s Ross Geller had a trait that made him slightly more special than others- his physical comedy. Although the entire cast of the show delivered some unforgettable slapstick gags, many fans feel Ross Geller was slightly more special.

When it comes to the funniest characters in the NBC sitcom, multiple fans pick Chandler Bing for his iconic one-liners. The Matthew Perry character gave us some of the most renowned sitcom dialogues that still make us chuckle. But when it comes to David Schwimmer’s Ross, the character mostly relied on physical comedy. It not only presented some of the most hilarious scenes in TV history but also boasted Schwimmer’s impressive body language.

It must be noted that physical comedy can go wrong very easily. In many cases, they come out as too over the top or cringe but in Ross’ case, most of them land brilliantly due to Schwimmer’s excellent timing.

A certain section of fans still felt our beloved Chan Chan Man gave numerous sarcastic moments in the show. But on the other hand, many also realized that most of the fan-favorite moments including the Pivot scene, the “I am Fine!”, the leather pants scene, and “We Were On a Break!”, all involved Ross Geller.

The late Matthew Perry’s one-liners still echo in the fans’ minds but it was mostly impactful during the show’s starting seasons. Going forward, it became a regular feature, expected from his character. But with Ross Geller, we were thrilled to figure out what more he had to offer in each episode.

David Schwimmer also made an immense effort to blend his extraordinary dialogue delivery with physical comedy to enhance the comic appeal of the scenes. Although fans still dislike many traits of Ross’ character, nobody can deny that Schwimmer’s physical comedy was a notable skill that made his character stand out among all.

Despite many positive aspects, Ross Geller’s character has received significant hate over time, primarily in the latter portions of the series, for being the self-proclaimed nice guy and his occasionally annoying behavior. Although his relationship with Jennifer Aniston‘s Rachel Green is listed among the top TV couples, many ardent fans do not feel good about it as well.

Nevertheless, these factors must never undermine the brilliant work David Schwimmer pulled off for the role. It feels good to see so many fans finally giving the actor the praise he always deserved.

All the seasons of Friends can be streamed on Max.
