While speaking at the Nordic Game conference in Sweden, Johan Pilestedt, former CEO of Arrowhead Game Studios, revealed that Helldivers 2 was planned to be “a co-op action shooter where players are put in the shoes of the ‘evil side’ grunts of pop culture.” This statement confirms that players have always been on the evil side, thinking that they are the good guys. There are many theories online that suggest Super Earth is brainwashing the citizens into believing that the bugs and bots are evil but in reality, the two factions are getting exploited by Super Earth for their resources.

Recently, a player posted a theory on the r/Helldivers2 subreddit that concludes that Super Earth uses Automatons to extract raw metals. According to this theory, Automatons first utilize raw materials on planets to create pure metals, then it is acquired by Helldivers in the form of Major Orders. The latest Major Order further backs up this theory as players are tasked to liberate Varylia 5 so a production factory for EXO-49 Emancipator Exosuit can be set up there.

Similarly, the game has explicitly stated that the Termind faction is used as a source for E-710. Players believe that they are fighting for democracy but in reality, they are the bad guys who are slaughtering the bugs and bots for Super Earth’s gain.
