After the disastrous performance of 2017’s Justice League, which was heavily altered under Joss Whedon’s vision, the former eventually had to release the director’s cut version in 2021. The latter was considered superior to the previous movie with many praising his direction. Even former DC President, Diane Nelson shared her opinions on the 2017 film, sharing how Whedon was unable to utilize the potential of the three powerful characters in DCU.

Diane Nelson, who ran DC Entertainment from 2009 to 2018 gave an insight on the $657.9 million box-office bomb, Justice League, admitting that the 2017’s final cut was ‘terrible.’

She mentioned,

“My characterization is Joss was a bit of a shiny penny during a time when they were looking for something shiny to grab onto… Yeah, I mean, I thought the final film was terrible.”

For the unversed, Zack Snyder was associated with the project but he stepped down as director during the post-production process due to the tragic demise of his daughter. The Avengers director, Joss Whedon was hired to finish the project.

He eventually oversaw rewrites and reshoots among other changes that drastically affected the darker version Synder aimed for. However, the film still credits Snyder as the director of the project. The movie’s runtime was also significantly reduced which led critics to give polarizing responses to the theatrical performance. Just like many, Nelson talked about preferring a darker version than 2017’s movie, which could have portrayed the Trinity characters much better.

She mentioned that she would rather prefer to watch Zack Snyder’s cut. Continuing the same, she also threw light on how it was unable to utilize the overall potential of the character.

Superman portrayed by Henry Cavill, Batman played by Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman were amazing characters who could have outdone any superhero movie given their influence, but the results were otherwise.

“Yeah, I mean, I would have much preferred a darker-than-I-wanted or longer-than-I’d hoped-for Zack Snyder cut than the Frankenstein cut we got in theatres. The Trinity characters of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman should have, by any measure, blown any other superhero movie away, and they didn’t.”

The movie was unable to get acclaim from critics with many dissatisfied with the plot and cinematography among a few other elements which led many to express interest in Snyder’s cut. It was eventually released on HBO Max in 2021 which many deemed was much better than the previous version.
