Largely Thanks to Elden Ring, FromSoftware Made over $150 Million Last Year

Apparently, Elden Ring was a pretty successful game for FromSoftware, as it resulted in the studio pulling in about $152 million in sales, with an operating profit around $91 million. This means that they operated at a roughly 60% profit margin, which is “an extremely high number for a video game company” according to Dr. Serkan Toto, the industry analyst who first reported on these profit numbers. He notes that all of these numbers are based on the USD-JPY exchange rate as of August 2, 2023.

Dr. Serkan Toto notes that these FromSoftware earnings numbers came from the Japanese government’s official gazette. He also clarifies that because the company is a “known subsidiary of Kadokawa” it is entirely possible that “some fiscal engineering” could have happened to distort the numbers, potentially skewing the publically available statistics. Furthermore, FROM’s revenue as a publisher also plays into these numbers, not just games developed in-house.

Obviously, Elden Ring played a huge role in these numbers growing so large. After all, it was one of the most popular games of 2022, even winning Game of the Year at Geoff Keighley’s Game Awards, managing to beat out God of War Ragnarök. As of March 2023, Elden Ring had sold over 20.5 million copies, making it FromSoftware’s best-selling game to date.

Right now, the studio is gearing up to release Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon, the first new entry in the studio’s long-running franchise in ten years, with the last title, Armored Core: Verdict Day, having released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Though it is a vastly different genre to the Soulslikes the studio has come to be primarily known for, it is actually one of its earliest staple franchises, with the original entry having released in 1997.

Though more of a niche than a juggernaut like Elden Ring, it will likely further bolster FromSoftware’s already impressive year of sales and profits.
