Elden Ring released to acclaim from both critics and fans in 2022, and is the latest Soulslike game by storied developer FromSoftware. It is a genre of games they pioneered and helped popularize around the world, to the point that other developers are adopting its tropes and creating their own games.

Featuring a huge open world with a lot of bosses to fight, difficult combat, numerous secrets to uncover and much, much more, Elden Ring was a commercial success for the developer and publisher Bandai Namco as well. It won numerous awards from various publications, including the game of the year award. The game’s famed director Hidetaka Miyazaki may have unconsciously confirmed a sequel to the hit game recently.

What did Hidetaka Miyazaki say about an Elden Ring sequel?

In the recently released Elden Ring: Books of Knowledge, Volume II by publisher Future Press there was a lot of information on the game, such as on the various creatures that inhabit the world and all the weapons that can be found in it. Also in it is an exclusive interview with director Hidetaka Miyazaki, which is where fans first got a hint of a sequel to Elden Ring.

As noted by one user on Reddit, the book said that “some lore bit clarifications and reveals are being saved for future games”.

Of course, there has been no official announcement of any kind by FromSoftware or Bandai Namco, and this guide book would indeed be a strange, highly understated way to announce a sequel to one of the most memorable games in recent years.

What could have Hidetaka Miyazaki’s comment have meant?

It’s worth remembering that FromSoftware is working on DLC (downloadable content) for Elden Ring, called Shadow of the Erd Tree. So the quote mentioned above could have been a reference to the DLC rather than a full-fledged sequel, as it’s highly unlikely that there would be a translation error in an official guide book. Therefore, the likeliest outcome is that this was just a misunderstanding or a misinterpretation rather than mention of a sequel.

But given how popular Elden Ring has been since its release, it does seem like a question of when, not if, we will see a sequel. After all, the game has sold over 20 million copies last we heard.  While other FromSoftware games such as Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice may not have received sequels, the former did receive DLC in the form of The Old Hunters and the Dark Souls series comprises of three games with each of them having at least one significant DLC expansion.

Another major fantasy game that was recently confirmed to be in early development was Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls 6, though that is a long way off and may not even see a release on this generation of consoles, which is the ninth. Nevertheless, these two fantasy behemoths going head to head at some point in the future is a mouth-watering proposition, even if it won’t come to pass any time soon.
