Robert Pattinson was an unlikely Batman. The Twilight star did an incredible job playing the masked crusader and the movie went on to earn a massive $771 Million at the box office. Hailed as the biggest part 1 of any comic book superhero movie, fans were delighted to know when it was announced that it would be getting a spinoff show soon.

The Penguin was undergoing production as a spin-off of Robert Pattinson’s The Batman universe. Previously scheduled to release in 2024, the spinoff show has now been, unfortunately, put on hold indefinitely.

The Penguin would have been Matt Reeves’ Batman Saga’s first spin-off. Based on Colin Farrell‘s Oz, the show would have showcased how Farrell’s character eventually became the crime boss known as Penguin. The eight-episode show has, however, been halted indefinitely amidst the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike.

While the writing was already completed, the decision to put the show on hold is most likely because of some last-minute changes, as are usually required by shows. Also, as the show was already in production and filming for more than three months, not a lot is probably left to be shot since most shows usually wind up within 5-6 months of filming.

As the official release date was not yet announced and the sequel to The Batman not releasing until 2025, there is no need for makers to rush into production. However, with the reports of the strike not ending anytime soon, fans of DC and Robert Pattinson can’t help but express their disappointment over the ‘indefinite hold’ on the show.

Since The Penguin was earlier scheduled to release by 2024, the release time might likely get pushed back further, most likely to early 2025.

Matt ReevesThe Batman Saga has been a different world within the larger Universe of DC. Focused primarily on Gotham City, The Penguin is based on the life of Oswald ‘Oz’ Chesterfield Cobblepot. Taking place in the aftermath of Gotham City’s flooding (as seen in Robert Pattinson’s The Batman), the 8-episode series will act as a bridge between the first movie and its sequel.

In an interview, HBO Max’s head of originals spoke up about the goal of the show,

“The goal of this is to show what Oz’s life is like and that’s very much in the streets of Gotham, trying to get up and over as only the Penguin can. As a hustler and a strategist with his own ambitions. It is a great example of having the time over eight episodes to tell a longer-arc character story with a lot of delicious twists and turns and new characters.”

A show deeply rooted in the streets of the sinister metropolis of Gotham, it offers an interesting take on how things come about in the Dark Knight’s kingdom.
