Notable for making one of the greatest action films of all time, his upcoming addition to the Mad Max franchise is set to debut next week. Although Miller set the bar extremely high with Fury Road, following Furiosa‘s score on the Tomatometer, things are looking promising for the prequel.

While not as high as Fury Road, which is sitting at 97% on the Tomatometer, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has opened to 86% on the review aggregator site. Although the score is subject to change after more reviews start to pour in, with its current score, it has surpassed some of the most successful films of this year so far.

This includes Kungfu Panda 4, which is currently sitting at a respectable 74%, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which despite its low score of 54%, has made a splash at the box office. More notably, the Anya Taylor-Joy-led feature also managed to beat Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and A24’s second biggest hit Civil War, with both sitting at a respectable 81%.

However, It’ll be interesting to see if George Miller‘s new addition to the franchise could replicate a similar success at the box office as the other major releases did this year.

Furiosa Was Written During the Development of Fury Road

With the prequel proving to be a success among critics, which earned a seven-minute standing ovation at Cannes, Miller revealed Furiosa was written during the development process of Fury Road. The auteur detailed that in order to tell Fury Road‘s story, they had to know the backstory of Charlize Theron‘s Furiosa and Tom Hardy’s Max.

He told The Hollywood Reporter:

There are certainly other stories there. Mainly because in order to tell the story of Fury Road, we had to know the backstory of Furiosa and Max in the year before.

Speaking of the future of the Mad Max IP moving forward, Miller hasn’t ruled out the possibility of another entry to the franchise, stating:

I’ll definitely wait to see how this [Furiosa] goes, before we even think about it.

With Wes Ball kickstarting a new chapter in the Planet of the Apes franchise with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, fans will hope Miller too continues to expand the franchise.
