James Gunn’s Superman Legacy is bringing many rumors with it. Fans were very excited, especially when WB Games President David Haddad revealed last week that tie-in DCU video games were in development. There was an expectation that this would include the Superman movie, scheduled for release in 2025, but it doesn’t seem to be the case.
Well, many folks’ hopes have been crushed by a recent statement from WB Discovery. It seems the things between the studio and the gaming business have never been as close as they should be, and that’s keeping fans from getting the video game tie-in as expected for the upcoming movie.
WB Isn’t Positive About a Video Game Based on Superman Legacy
CEO and President of Global Streaming and Games for Warner Bros. Discovery. JB Perrette spoke to Variety about a potential tie-in video game for James Gunn’s upcoming Superman Legacy. Sadly, his words may disappoint many fans, as the studio won’t be releasing a DCU-connected Superman game simply because they feel obligated to do so.
JB Perrette adds that there is not as close a relationship between the studio and the games business as it should be. This could be a hurdle for players for a tie-in Superman video game. Moreover, Perrette believes they need to do something much more sense for fans.
”Frankly, there hasn’t been as close a relationship between the studio and the games business as there should have been. And James is actually a gamer, so having someone who’s passionate about it is super helpful. Also, Warner Bros. Games is actively working with (Gunn and Safran) on the core franchises within the DC Universe.
‘While they’re working on a Superman movie title, we’re not going to launch a Superman game purely because we feel obligated. We have to do something that makes sense for the gaming strategy and for fans and for the consumer.”
Fans Shouldn’t Expect Every Video Game Tying into the DCU
Based on JB Perrette’s statements, it can be said that folks shouldn’t expect every game to be connected to the DCU in a way. However, since this is not a definitive statement, it should not be forgotten that some stuff may change in the future.
Although Superman was a phenomenal superhero, he did not achieve the same success in the gaming world. Most of what we’ve had so far has been overshadowed by the Spider-Man and Batman titles, and perhaps a DCU-tied addition could change the balance.
What do you think about the latest statement made by WB? Do you think James Gunn’s Superman Legacy should get a video game tie-in as expected?
