The world thanked the Gods when Joffrey Baratheon, the incorrigible teen King, died in the fourth season of Game of Thrones. The son of Cersei Lannister became king when Robert Baratheon died after a hunting accident and began his tyranny in King’s Landing. He was one of the most unpopular kings and was despised by his own uncles.

While no fan would wish for this to happen, Joffrey could have survived if his grandfather had planned things a bit differently. A fan theory suggested that if Tywin Lannister had gotten Sansa Stark to marry Tommen Baratheon instead of Tyrion, it might have prevented the teen king’s death.

The Incorrigible Joffrey Baratheon Would Have Survived Game of Thrones If He Did One Different Thing

While antagonists like Joker, and James Moriarty have fandoms of their own, some villains are so repulsive that no fan can even begin to humanize them. Take Dolores Umbridge from the Harry Potter franchise, Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, or Game of Thrones’ Joffrey Baratheon, who seems to be the absolute worst.

Joffrey Baratheon is the son of King Robert Baratheon and Cersei Lannister and is known for being one of the most hated characters in Game of Thrones. The incorrigible king spends his day torturing anyone below him in status (which is everyone as he is king) and is responsible for tensions arising between the Starks and Westeros.

While he is killed off in season 4 (much to the fans’ delight), one change in his marriage might have saved him and secured his spot on the Iron Throne. According to a fan theory, if Tywin Lannister had got Sansa Stark to marry Joffrey’s brother Tommen, it would have deterred many of Joffrey’s enemies from assassinating him.

Peter Baelish, who poisoned Joffrey, would not have done so as his aim of marrying Sansa would have been riddled with more obstacles and the Tyrells would have risked letting Sansa become Queen as Tommen would have ascended the throne after Joffrey’s death. Tywin Lannister’s intention to mock Tyrion and Sansa seems to have cost him greatly.

Joffrey Baratheon is truly one of the most hated characters in all of fiction due to his brat-like immaturity coupled with his power as king. He has been responsible for some of the most horrific things in Game of Thrones and even repulsed his own uncle Tyrion Lannister and his uncle-father Jamie Lannister.

Surprisingly, Jack Gleeson, who played the role to perfection, reportedly did not get any hate for the role and most people just appreciated him for his performance. The actor said to EW,

A lot of people come up to me because I guess this rumor started that people were horrible to me on the street or I get attacked… whereas I’ve never had one negative experience. I feel like people are extra nice to me because they think people attack me, so maybe I should keep the rumor going.

The actor also mentioned that he liked the memes and gifs that came out of his character and the legendary lines he had.
