Despite receiving favorable reviews overall, both Gears 4 and 5 did not achieve the impact Microsoft had hoped for, especially not among hardcore fans. That’s why the studio decided to present Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel to everything seen in the saga so far.

Fans of the franchise hope to see better-developed characters, more organic moments of humor, and a positive balance between narrative and horror. These were some aspects of the new games made by a different studio and development team that were criticized by IP followers.

The Coalition Has a Unique Opportunity to Make Gears of War Once Again the Most Important Saga for Microsoft

Despite many players expecting a sixth installment of the franchise because of the cliffhanger, The Coalition surprised everyone with the announcement of Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel that will show how the Locust first emerged.

It will also depict how humanity was unprepared to face these gigantic beings. Another notable feature of this prequel is that Marcus Fenix will once again be the protagonist.

Fans are very excited about what they will see in this new game, and they hope the studio will be more organized in presenting character development. One of the main complaints about the last two installments was the handling of humor, which made the events feel nonsensical or weightless.

Why Gears 1-3 is superior. Gears 5 would NEVER.

In the first trilogy, it was well-balanced and felt much more organic. All of this is thanks to characters like Cole Train.

This Studio Can Raise the Bar for the Action Franchise

On Reddit, a user posted a video showing one of the funniest characters from the first trilogy, Cole Train, giving an epic and hilarious moment in the story.

This particular character was very well-developed and managed to bring out humor organically and naturally, without forcing it or affecting the story. This is something the studio should use as a reference for the upcoming prequel.

The studio had already clarified that this new Gears of War would focus primarily on the terror humanity felt when first encountering the Locust.

Humans are unprepared to face them, and this will be a main driving force for the narrative. Everything points to this prequel being a complete shift from what the studio did with the previous two games, and it seems the fans wanted this.

Gears of War: E-Day will arrive in 2025, although it does not yet have a confirmed specific release date. The game will show Marcus Fenix and company facing the Locust right after the known Pendulum Wars, where two human factions fought against each other.

One of the main features of this prequel is that given the emergency situation these soldiers are experiencing, humor will have little place.

I'm a big fan of movies and videogames in general. I really love Pokémon and Godzilla. One of my favorite games is The Last of Us, Part II. A compelling and well-written story is always welcome.
