It is common for manga creators to take inspiration from other mangakas for their work. Be it a character, an arc, or a fight scene, manga writers often take reference from other famous manga writers and instill that aspect in their work as a homage or a love for the particular manga writer. Popular anime and manga creator Gege Akutami, the mind behind Jujutsu Kaisen has admitted quite frequently about taking inspiration from creators like Tite Kubo(Bleach) and Yoshihiro Togashi(YuYu Hakusho).
Akutami has also revealed that one of the most loved villains of the series and the best friend of Gojo Satoru, Suguru Geto was also inspired by YuYu Haksuho’s most notable villain, Shinobu Sensui. If fans take a proper look at both the characters they may be able to find some sort of resemblance between both characters.
Shinobu Sensui was the Blueprint for Suguru Geto
Akutami disclosed some insights about their characters in an interview with Fuji TV’s Mando Kobayashi program to commemorate Jujutsu Kaisen’s special award which was uploaded on X(Twitter) by @soukatsu_ on. According to Akutami, Suguru Geto is inspired by one of Yu Yu Hakusho’s most renowned antagonists, Shinobu Sensui. Suguru Geto was inspired by Gege Akutami’s enjoyment of Shinobu Sensui, an antagonist in Yoshihiro Togashi’s manga series YuYu Hakusho. However, they were upset with the outcome. Geto was designed as a character that made snap judgments about people. While Sensui witnessed certain people horrifically mistreating the demons he was tasked with killing, Geto became disillusioned with humanity in general.
Akutami even claimed to have an emotional attachment to Sensui from Yu Yu Hakusho’s Chapter Black arc. Akutami sought to understand how different Geto became after leaving the Jujutsu Sorcerers and how he grew to despise ordinary humans.
Who is Shinobu Sensui?
Shinobu Sensui, popularly known as the “Black Angel,” was a former Spirit Detective in his youth and the main adversary of the Chapter Black Saga. He is also an archenemy of Yusuke Urameshi. Before his insanity took hold, Shinobu’s natural personality held stark black-and-white beliefs about the nature of the world. As a result, he was as virtuous as humanly possible to those he thought righteous but completely brutal to all those he considered terrible. Sensui was a tremendously powerful human who had more than ten times the spiritual force of Yusuke in their combat.
However, Suguru Geto is not the only character that took inspiration from other mangas and anime series. Akutami has also admitted that the ever-powerful Aoi Todo was a reference to Kenpachi Zaraki from the popular anime and manga series Bleach created by Tite Kubo.
