Gege Akutami, the creator of Jujutsu Kaisen, wears a mask so that people do not recognize them in public. Even though they wear a mask to hide their face, they cannot do anything about the tiring work they have to do day in and day out. Gege Akutami Gets Exhausted Writing Jujutsu Kaisen
There are several interesting facts about the anime. While people only get to see what’s on the surface, there are other things beneath it, too. Jujutsu Kaisen is also not an exception. One of the interesting facts about Jujutsu Kaisen is that Gege Akutami feels tired of their own work. They feel that they should have known how tiring it is to be a mangaka.
During their interview with Shonen Jump (via X), Gege Akutami was asked how long it takes to complete one manga chapter. Gege Akutami said,
“It depends on the chapter, but usually around half a day. The weird thing is, even when I’ve got the story all thought and I’m not unsure of anything, it can take me twelve hours or more just to get started on the storyboards (which only takes up six or seven hours to finish). If, like me, you’re the type of person who spends three hours psyching yourself up for a thirty-minute task, you might be in trouble if you’re ever serialized in a manga magazine.”
Gege Akutami has a bad habit of relying too much on sketches and rough drafts. Many a time, they get suggested to change a few things. They do the fixes on the storyboards, which makes them unwieldy. Gege Akutami might be a great mangaka, but they are clumsy.
Gege Akutami Shares How To Write Strong Characters
During the same interview, Gege Akutami was asked how someone should practice making strong characters. They answered, “It comes down to imagining how other people will feel about your characters. Which is hard.” Gege Akutami always wished that they had practiced the art of writing manga. It would have been better for them.

They also revealed that there had been many times when adjusting the Jujutsu Kaisen drafts, based on the advice of others, felt like removing pieces from a Jenga tower, which eventually led to collapse and failure. According to them, changing minor details is fine, but they would rather put in the work and start over from scratch instead of fixing up many things in their storyboards.
Fans love Gege Akutami. They might not have any prior experience as mangaka. But still, they managed to create a great story with Jujutsu Kaisen. They can be clumsy, but they sure know the secret recipe for a masterpiece.
