In an exciting summer revival, the Mad Max franchise returned to the silver screen with its rebooted installment, Fury Road in 2015. Thirty years after the release of Beyond Thunderdome, the movie continued the post-apocalyptic adventures of the enigmatic protagonist, Max Rockatansky. As the movie navigated a wasteland where oil is a precious commodity, the film featured Tom Hardy in the iconic role previously portrayed by Mel Gibson.

George Miller revealed how Mel Gibson would have destroyed the movie

When asked why the Tom Hardy-led movie did not feature Mel Gibson in any role, director George Miller revealed the reason behind his decision. Comparing the cameo with Sean Connery and Daniel Craig’s equation in the James Bond film, Miller explained that such a transition could have potentially disrupted the movie’s immersion and confused the audience. He said,

“It’s like having Sean Connery appear in a Daniel Craig James Bond. It would throw you out of the movie, it would confuse the audience, and you’re trying your damnedest to actually keep people in the movie rather than throw them out.”

Furthermore, he emphasized his dedication to keeping viewers engaged and invested in the film, making it a priority to avoid anything that might detract from the experience. While Miller acknowledged the potential interest in working with Mel Gibson again, he firmly stated that it would not be in the context of the $365 million Mad Max franchise. He said,

“Even though it would be interesting working with Mel again, certainly not in a Mad Max movie.”

Apart from this, Miller also addressed the criticisms surrounding the importance placed on a character, which was not the lead.

Why was Charlize Theron placed in a more pivotal role than Tom Hardy?

Addressing criticisms from certain viewers who felt that Charlize Theron’s character, Furiosa, played a more pivotal role in Fury Road than Max himself, Miller attributed such concerns to the audience rather than his own approach. He asserted that maintaining the audience’s engagement was paramount, and any interpretation of character prominence rested with individual viewers.

He said during a media interaction, “That’s more their problem than mine.” And further added that Furiosa “could be” back in the future, “We’re in conversation about that now”.
