While the DLC for Elden Ring was long anticipated and fans waited impatiently for an official date announcement and a first look for months, the trailer drop for Shadow of the Erdtree last month still caught fans by surprise. A lot has been revealed since that first gameplay trailer dropped, giving fans an idea about what to expect from the upcoming DLC which will go live on the 21st of June.
Fans will be glad to hear what director Hidetaka Miyazaki revealed in a recent interview. Miyazaki spoke at length about the DLC and George R. R. Martin’s inspiration while also revealing there are still stories to be told from the realms of Lands Between.
Only One Part of George R. R. Martin’s Contribution was Used So Far in Elden Ring
In an IGN interview that released after the Shadow of the Erdtree trailer dropped, director Hidetaka Miyazaki was asked if George R. R. Martin had any role in setting up the DLC. Miyazaki stated while there were discussions, Martin had not written anything specifically for the DLC.
George R. R. Martin had written the backstory for the game, and Miyazaki was quick to credit him for all of his influence in the game that has since shaped the way that Shadow of the Erdtree was created. Miyazaki went on to explain further that whatever players have seen so far in the base game and what’s to be seen in the upcoming DLC together constitutes only one part of all that Martin had contributed.
Shadow of the Erdtree is yet another part of the original mythos that he wrote and that has inspired us to create the story of this DLC.
While appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert back in 2022, George R. R. Martin revealed having written an entire history for the game. He mentioned having written about “who all the characters were, and who was killing each other, and what powers they had.”
More Challenges Await Hardcore Players in Shadow of the Erdtree
Miyazaki also sent out a message to hardcore fans of the game who haven’t stopped discovering hidden details in the game. He mentioned there will be a challenging experience awaiting players in the DLC that will test even the hardcore fans of the game.
Miyazaki went on to state that there will be optional bosses who “have been tuned in a similar way to the likes of Malenia“. Miyazaki mentioned these bosses may not be crucial to the completion of the DLC but will challenge players to the limits.
Going by what’s so far revealed by Miyazaki about Shadow of the Erdtree and the world that GRRM has revealed to have written for Elden Ring, fans are sure to have high expectations from the DLC and beyond. There are also high hopes for an Elden Ring sequel to happen soon, given the investment into the lore by hardcore fans of the game.
