While the entire world was fighting a pandemic back in 2020, Gerard Butler came out with an apocalyptic thriller, Greenland, directed by Ric Roman Waugh. Even though the movie did not do too well at the box office, it received generally positive reviews from both fans and critics thanks to the exhilarating and emotional journey of the Garrity family.
After Greenland’s release, the possible sequel found itself in a bit of a conundrum thanks to one of its co-producers. However, fans of the film do not have to worry anymore as the sequel is finally going into production with Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin returning to continue the story of the Garrity family.
Greenland’s Sequel Gets the Green Light
A year after STX Entertainment bought the rights for Greenland’s sequel in 2021, the entertainment company put the film into bankruptcy protection before getting acquired by Najafi Companies in 2022. This was done to ensure that the film’s co-producers wouldn’t terminate the rights of STX and work on the sequel all by themselves. Thanks to the complexities of this, Greenland 2 faced several delays.
But now, Variety can confirm that Greenland 2 is finally all set to go into production in April. The sequel will be titled Greenland: Migration and will focus on the Garrity family and the remaining survivors building a new life for themselves in the post-apocalyptic world after the Clarke comet practically destroyed Earth.
Gerard Butler (John Garrity) and Morena Baccarin (Allison Garrity) will be returning to their respective roles in the sequel. Director Ric Roman Waugh will also return as director. Talking about Greenland: Migration, Production company Anton’s Sébastien Raybaud stated,
“We are thrilled to have Gerard, Morena and Ric back on board for ‘Greenland: Migration’ to show the audiences what happened next to the Garrity family. To be back working with the teams at G-BASE, Thunder Road, CineMachine and STX, we know the next installment will be just as captivating as the first.”
We cannot wait to see what fate awaits the survivors and how they manage to build life once again, starting from scratch. Hopefully, the sequel manages to keep the audience on the edge of their seats, just like its predecessor!
Gerard Butler Loved How “Human” Greenland Was
Of course, Greenland had all the elements that make an apocalyptic film downright terrifying, including the sense of impending doom and the adrenaline rush of making it out just in time. However, what made the film different from others in its genre is how it perfectly reflected humanity and depicted the emotional vulnerability of its characters.
In fact, Butler signed on to do Greenland because he, too, felt the same. Talking to UPI, the actor stated,
“It just sucked me into this world. It was so human, taking it from the lens of a family just trying to survive. There was something so vulnerable and honest and authentic about it, like if this were really to happen, this is how it would play out in all its messiness and glory and the forgotten things and the not getting in – all of that.”
Butler also stated that while he has made a ton of films like this one, Greenland was different as people didn’t worry about the comet as much as they worried about the fate and well-being of their families. Greenland proved that your loved ones are always going to be your priority, even if you are in a staring contest with the Grim Reaper itself.
