July 17th 2020. A day quite unremarkable in nearly every way, other than the launch of the exquisite samurai/ninja action-adventure game Ghost of Tsushima. Yes, it really has been three years! Many games over the years have attempted to capture the magic, wonder and atmosphere of such a violent and yet honourable period of Japanese history, but none have managed it with quite such authenticity and excitement as that of Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima.

For those that love the samurai period of Japanese history, they will no doubt have a huge affinity with the PlayStation exclusive. Even those without a particular interest found plenty to enjoy about the game. With the game’s finely balanced stealth and swordplay combat, the stunningly rendered scenery and endlessly enjoyable exploration/domination of the local landscapes and strongholds, Ghost of Tsushima was a worthy end of console game. Three years on, and it is still widely played now.

In fact, during the recent coverage of PlayStation’s PS Plus anniversary, it was revealed that of all the hundreds of games on the service, Ghost of Tsushima is the most played, and by quite the margin.

That’s why it’ll come as no surprise to find out that with the anniversary of the game’s release, the title has shot to the number one trending gaming topic on Twitter, and with it has come a tirade of memories, gameplay shares and moments of pure. beautiful-sword-involved-violence.

Ghost of Tsushima is one of the most cinematic video games of the last generation of consoles, allowing players to create their own stories within their captures. The fantastic and versatile photo mode allows players to document their travels, and as above, the content is only limited by the player’s ability to think outside the box, and edit worth a damn.

We’re all still waiting for any official news on a sequel to the game, but with such commanding sales and critic scores, the sequel is almost guaranteed. A film based on the IP is currently in development, with John Wick creator and director Chad Stahelski at the helm, so we can assume that’s in good hands as well.

One thing is for certain though, a lot of people will be booting up Ghost of Tsushima today, if only to partake in a few camp clear-outs and local skirmishes. If nothing else, take the time to allow Jin Sakai some breathing room and take in the beautiful sights available in the game, because there aren’t any others like it out there. Not yet.
