Ghost of Tsushima was the perfect swan song for the PlayStation 4 generation and the gaming community couldn’t get enough and even campaigned for it to win Game of the Year. However, the competition was fierce, and it may not have won the title, but it won the hearts of fans.

At the end of The Game Awards in 2020, Sony was the winner and it even had two out of the six nominees be first-party titles. The award was handed over to The Last of Us Part 2 and while it may not be everyone’s pick, the game still deserved it but fans are not over it.

Sony holds this project in high regard and even has features for the PC port that God of War doesn’t have on launch. Sucker Punch Productions struck gold with this franchise and the community is eager for more. 2020 was a great year for gaming but there can only be one winner and Naughty Dog took home the bacon to no one’s surprise despite having a controversial sequel to The Last of Us.

Everyone has their own opinions and it is difficult to deny that Naughty Dog doesn’t deserve both the recognition and backlash it received from the gaming community for taking risks with the story. The franchise has the advantage of age, which makes it much more popular and competitive compared to a new IP.

The developers pushed the hardware of the last generation to its limit with groundbreaking dismemberment features and gore. While Sucker Punch Productions applied the same formula that most open-world games have, it was the perfect balance of side content that deserved more credit, along with the atmospheric scenery and complex combat.

The Last of Us Part 2 Won the Award but Ghost of Tsushima Won the Fans

The Last of Us Part 2 and Ghost of Tsushima are both equally great PlayStation games.

The battle was neck-to-neck and the gaming community felt betrayed by the narrative of Naughty Dog’s ambitious sequel and was not a fan of the story. However, the game is still technically superior in terms of graphics and the narrative is debatable.

Despite losing, Ghost of Tsushima held up well against the tough competition and was that close to winning, which is an impressive feat for a brand-new IP going toe to toe with one of the most well-known franchises of gaming.

Regardless of which game won, Sony was the one true winner for winning the title and soaking up the success of a new franchise that could potentially be of the same caliber. The publisher is selective with the projects its subsidiaries are pushing for and these two games released in the same year are a pure coincidence and a nightmare.

Perhaps this will be a lesson for Sony to avoid releasing two major first-party games within the same year to avoid clashing the opinions of the gaming community. Naughty Dog went with a bold approach that subverted expectations, and Sucker Punch Productions played it safe but had much more to offer.
