As live-action adaptations of popular video-game franchises are soon getting recognition, Sony’s God of War is the most recent addition. Having started back in 2005 on Sony’s PlayStation 2, God of War is easily one of the greatest game franchises to have flourished over the years. As a flagship title for the PlayStation brand, the video game has now spanned over ten games across different platforms. Recently, it was announced that the franchise will have its eleventh game, God of War Ragnarok, to expand its mythological universe as Kratos enters the realms of the Norse Gods. While the game has enjoyed its massive popularity over the years, its most recent game titled God of War that was released back in 2018 was a mega-hit that received critical acclaim. After years of ruling the video game genre, Kratos is finally coming to live-action on Amazon.

God of War Live-Action TV Series In Talks

First reported by Deadline, Sony has entered into negotiations with Amazon to adapt God of War as a live-action adaption on Prime Video. The streaming platform has already become a fan-favorite with its upcoming Lord of the Rings series. According to reports, God of War will have Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, creators of The Expanse, at its helm. Further reports have also revealed that The Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins will also be attached to the series. Though both Sony and Amazon are still in negotiations, it’s hard to imagine for Amazon to lose the rights to other streaming platforms.

While it’s worth speculating that a lot of popular video-game franchises haven’t really enjoyed much success when it comes to live-action adaptations, the trend seems to be changing. Sony’s Uncharted was the most recent franchise to be adapted on the big screen starring Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg, and Antonio Banderas which was a commercial success but received mixed reviews. Similarly, other popular franchises such as Borderlands and Halo are also being adapted for live-action.

Last year, Sony had announced that the critically acclaimed The Last of Us would be adapted as a TV series on HBO starring Pedro Pascal. After the overwhelming success of The Witcher on Netflix where Henry Cavill stars as Geralt of Rivia, it makes a lot of sense for God of War to choose television series instead of a film. With its rich mythology and memorable characters, a show would be able to deliver justice to the long-standing video-game franchise.
