The original God of War games are considered by many to be staples of the Action Game genre and have left their incredible hallmark on the gaming world. However, the biggest criticism against Sony and PlayStation regarding these titles was that the trilogy never seemed to make its way completely to next-gen platforms.

For fans of the Greek take on the infamous Kratos, you’re in luck, as the latest rumor hints at a possible remaster of the mainline games, according to a credible source.

The franchise has evolved greatly since its original gory take on the Greek mythos, now taking its place in Norse mythology with the 2018 release and, of course, Ragnarok. But fans of the original series have always wanted PS5 versions of these titles to play them in their most definitive forms.

The Original God of War and its Sequels May be Making their Way to PlayStation 5

The original God of War games on PlayStation 5 would be a dream come true for fans.
The original God of War games on PlayStation 5 would be a dream come true for fans.

The rumor comes from a trusted gaming insider. Speaking a bit on the topic during the official XboxEra podcast, Co-Founder Nick Baker mentioned his lack of interest in the direction of the Norse titles and how he wanted to play the original games in their best form, before briefly mentioning the potential release of a remaster.

I’m a person for a long time has bemoaned the direction God of War went somewhat and have yearned for the hack n’ slash OG God of War games. I just love them so much. And when I heard this might be happening,

I told a friend of mine who also loves the OG God of War games and they got very excited. And I heard we might be getting the OG God of War trilogy remastered on PlayStation.

In fact, along with Nick, many have criticized the direction of the new games as well, including fans as well as the original games’ creator, David Jaffe.

Considering the fact that the original games are so beloved, it’s highly likely that PlayStation is working on this potential release, especially since the franchise has been homerun after homerun for them.

Many have theorized in the past that maybe the first game in the series could be getting a remake. In fact, even this specific episode of the XboxEra podcast has the whole segment where they talk about it labeled “The OG God of War Trilogy is being Remastered/Remade“.

But it seems that the remake idea may be out of the window, as Sony will probably release all these titles in their original, yet upscaled, forms, as per Baker.

Regardless, fans of the original games are sure to be excited upon hearing this news; however, the release window is still not certain. Nick went on to say that he wasn’t sure whether or not the game would even be announced next year or even released in 2024 or 2025.

But what about Ascension, Chains of Olympus, and Ghost of Sparta?
But what about Ascension, Chains of Olympus, and Ghost of Sparta?

Furthermore, the spinoff title Ascension may not be included in the collection, as Nick remarks that it was only described as the original trilogy. This also throws the prospect of the PlayStation Portable titles Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta, being in the collection out the window.

Though still not confirmed, we can infer that both the announcement and release will be fairly close to one another, as the trend with projects like these dictates. Because of this, the possibility of a 2024 release seems much more likely as compared to it releasing in 2025.

That was pretty much all from Nick’s side, and unfortunately, we are still unaware of which development studio will be taking the charge. The chances of it being Santa Monica itself are slim, as the studio is currently going all in on Ragnarok with the release of Valhalla and perhaps even more planned DLC or expansions.

The best candidate may be Bluepoint Studios, as they are the ones Sony always calls for projects like these, responsible for releases such as Demon’s Souls Remake and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection. But there’s also a rumor that the studio is working on their own individual project instead of a rerelease, so as of now, there’s no official verdict as to who will be leading this collection.

Regardless, fans of the original games have much to be excited about. These titles mean a lot to many and, as good games in their own right, deserve to be played in their definitive forms. If true, we can expect an announcement from Sony very soon.
