Godzilla Minus One became the first Japanese film to be nominated for an Oscar. Director Takashi Yamazaki and his VFX team won the Best Visual Effects Oscar, a deserving recognition for the film. As the film becomes available to the wider public on streaming platforms, more details emerge about the film. One scene in the climax sets up a potential sequel for the film.
Yamazaki confirmed that the final moments of the film featured Godzilla Cells or G-Cells. The G-Cells in the Japanese kaiju lore were used to create two prominent villains, Biollante and SpaceGodzilla, thus hinting at their appearance in the sequel.
Godzilla Minus One‘s G-Cells Sets Up For An Interesting Sequel
Godzilla Minus One climax was interestingly horrific for many viewers and it left many open ends that could lead to a potential sequel under Takashi Yamazaki. The film featured one of the most villainous versions of the kaiju monster that Americans have ever seen.
During the first act of the film, Noriko, played by Minami Hamabe, is presumed dead from the monster’s attack. The lead of the film – former kamikaze pilot Kōichi Shikishima, played by Ryunosuke Kamiki – vows to defeat the monster after losing Noriko. When every measure fails, Shikishima pilots an explosive-filled plane into the monster’s mouth.
The climax reveals that Shikishima is safe as he is ejected from the plane before the collision. Viewers also find out that the city may not be done with the monster, whose flesh appears to be regenerating as it sinks to the bottom of the ocean. And most surprisingly, Noriko is alive in the film.
Shikishima and Noriko reunite at the end of the film, but this reunion is also filled with a mystery. Godzilla’s deadly atomic breath left a mysterious black mark on Noriko’s neck, which was confirmed to be G-Cells by Yamazaki. According to theories on the Godzilla subreddit, the G-cells hint at the coming of two deadly monsters.
Fans of the kaiju lore know that G-cells were responsible for creating the monstrous Biollante and SpaceGodzilla. These two villains could appear in a potential sequel film. As for Noriko, she may also gain some powers from the G-cells, probably including immortality.
Takashi Yamazaki Wants To Direct A Godzilla Minus One Sequel
In an interview with the Japanese website HJ Web, Takashi Yamazaki expressed his interest in making a sequel film. He shared that Toho had no plans for the movie now, but he would be disappointed if they called someone else to helm the next movie.
He also shared that if he were to direct Toho’s 34th Godzilla film, he would choose to do a sequel rather than another standalone Godzilla film. Fans believe that the filmmaker would probably address the open ends in Godzilla Minus One in the sequel film. Yamazaki shared (via Dexerto):
If I were to direct the next Godzilla movie, I would like to do a sequel to this one. There have been two standalone Godzilla films in a row now, so perhaps the next one will need to feature a villain monster.
However, a source close to Toho reported on X that the company is looking to make another standalone feature. The report also shared that Toho was not planning to bring back Yamazaki, but rather eyeing another director to helm the movie. Shinsuke Sato, the director of the Kingdom films, is reportedly the potential candidate.
