Godzilla vs. Kong: 6 Potential Sequel Ideas, Ranked

Godzilla vs. Kong has been a monstrous success at the Box Office. Despite a global pandemic, the movie has done pretty well in its theatrical run. It is set to be the highest grossing Pandemic era movie to have been ever released in the theater. Legendary’s Monsterverse was supposed to close the lid with the third Godzilla movie. Godzilla vs. Kong featured the two titular Kaijus coming face to face in a titanic brawl. It was gorgeous and fantabulous. But the movie does have some pretty well-laid out ways for a sequel.

And all of them could roar into success just like Godzilla vs. Kong did. There are quite a number of ways Legendary could explore the Monsterverse franchise. Given just how lucrative the entire Godzilla franchise is, Legendary will have a hard time letting go. There are several sequel ideas the studio could explore should they decide to milk the Monsterverse even more.

And here’s how.

Idea 1 – The Titan War Prequel

It was established in the trailer as well as in the movie that Kong and Godzilla are not unique. They hail from a long line of warriors of their kind. Godzilla and Kong’s species roamed the earth when humanity was in its infancy. Somewhere down the line, long before the dawn of mankind, Kong and Godzilla’s people fought against each other. Godzilla and Kong are the last two remaining Titans of their respective species.

The Titan War has made Kong and Godzilla harbor a lot of resentment towards each other. For a war to have generated so much hatred it burned within them even after centuries, the war must have been of legendary proportions. The Ancient Titan War cemented the fate of the world. The Titans went into hiding and Godzilla became the new Alpha guardian of the planet ages later. Humanity too had a role to play which still remains shrouded in mystery. There are several cave paintings shown in the closing credits of King Of the Monsters that proves humanity knew about the Titan War.

An ancient Titan War prequel could open the doors for some massive Kaiju action. It will rile up the audience in the theaters.

Idea 2 – Enter The Destoroyah

If Legendary decides to go the traditional route, they could introduce another rogue Kaiju of the same power magnitude as Ghidorah. the only monster powerful enough to rival both Kong and Godzilla is the one known as Destoroyah. Possessing strength, speed, and ferocity that would put even Godzilla to shame, Destoroyah is one of the chosen few who actually possess the power to kill the Alpha.

His origin story is pretty damn interesting too. Destoroyah was created after the Oxygen Detonaor explosion killed the original Godzilla in 1954. From the explosion rose the Destroyah, a creature that is the living incarnation of chaos and destruction. If you thought King Ghidorah was tough, this guy is a total God. Destoroyah is powerful enough to take both Kong and Godzilla. In the earlier movies, Destoroyah was only defeated after Godzilla joined forces with the Japanese Army. Using a combination of Godzilla’s nuclear meltdown ability with the Japanese Defense Forces freezing technology, the Kaiju was eventually killed.

Idea 3 – Humanity Turns On The Titans

In Godzilla vs. Kong, Godzilla is seemingly attacking random locations all over the planet. Manking is convinced the Alpha Titan has officially gone rogue. Apex Cybernetics and its eccentric founder believe that humanity should be at the top of the food chain, not the other way around. to do so they created a kaiju of their own, powered by a limitless source of energy and controlled via Ghidorah’s telepathy. in the end, Godzilla and Kong end up destroying the Mecha-Godzilla. But it has been established that technology of this sorts exists.

Now that the governments all across the world know they are at the mercy of Godzilla should he ever decide to throw a temper tantrum like last time, they might join forces. One megacorporation was able to conjure up the Mecha-Godzilla. Imagine what humanity could do should it decide to unite against the titans and kill them off one by one. Instead of co-existence with the Titans, humans have decided to exterminate them and restore the original balance.

Idea 4 – Godzilla Chooses His Successor

During the climactic Godzilla vs. Kong battle, the King of the Monsters sustained some heavy injuries. Both Kong and Godzilla were injured but the Alpha took the brunt of the damage. Godzilla has been protecting the planet for ages. Maybe in the next Monsterverse movie, the story of Godzilla retiring and passing the torch to someone else could be explored.

Kong is still the younger of the two. he could become the new Alpha. Moreover the next Monsterverse could also opt for a time-skip, introducing Godzilla’s children. To top it off, there is no shortage of titans aiming to usurp Godzilla’s throne.

Idea 5 – The Hollow Earth

The Hollow Earth has been recently introduced to the Monsterverse. In Godzilla vs. Kong, Kong travels to the center of the planet. There he encounters an entire ecosystem thriving in isolation. This secret world is home to many monsters and Titans like the flying serpent creatures. Godzilla vs. Kong ended with Monarch setting up a base in Hollow Earth. The Hollow Earth is Kong’s new home.

Instead of focusing on Godzilla, Legendary could swerve the Monsterverse to focus more on the younger Kong. Kong’s ancestors, as seen in Godzilla vs. Kong, once dwelled in this world. they helped create the temple and even resided in it. The fact that there was an ancient civilization in Hollow earth that was possibly human can’t also be ignored. The next Monsterverse movie could reveal how and why Kong’s ancestors died. That would be a good way to spice up the entire Monsterverse franchise.

Idea 6 – The Outer Space Equation

Although the Monsterverse has established the fact that Titans have been walking the planet even before humanity, nobody has dared ask the question how they came into being the first place. Creatures evolving into Titans through a strictly natural case of evolution would have offset the course of the planetary ecosystem. the world would have been entirely different. Humanity may have never come into existence.

And yet here we stand. The Monsterverse has Titans as well as humans. This implies that Titans might have been an invasive species not native to the planet. They have been probably seeded on earth by some other force we are not aware off. King Ghidorah, as established in King of The Monsters, comes from outer space. Maybe the rest of the Titans are alien creatures as well. This theory could be explored in depth in the next Monsterverse movie.
