The Dragon Ball franchise started as a comedy adventure but thereafter became an action-adventure series. Martial arts was Akira Toriyama’s main focus. He explored the human potential and their ability to get control of their ki and use it to enhance their capabilities. But from Dragon Ball Z, the Saiyans were introduced, and the power dynamic focus shifted to them.
Since then, humans were barely explored, with the Saiyans getting one transformation after another. One of the recent fan theories claimed that Toriyama could have explored the human side more with Gohan. It suggests that Gohan’s Mystic form was a result of his human side. Unfortunately, the mangaka never fully utilized Mystic Gohan.
Gohan Could Have Been Missing Link In Dragon Ball

Dragon Ball Z and onwards did a great job with the Saiyan transformations and got the fans hooked to it. But there were times when it felt as if only the Saiyans could evolve, and the humans were also side pieces in Akira Toriyama’s masterpiece. Even though he started with the humans, he failed to keep up the trend in the later series. One of the fan theories claims it to be the missing link in Dragon Ball. But it could have changed if Gohan kept on training.
The theory suggests Gohan’s Mystic form was a transformation from his human side. Being a half-human/half-Saiyan, he had access to tap into either ki. When Guru unlocked Gohan and Krillin’s maximum potential, the former was yet to get access to his Saiyan powers. Later, when Elder Kai performed a ceremony and unlocked Gohan’s Mystic form, the latter turned into a Super Saiyan. But he could not feel any difference in powers.

Gohan had to get access to that particular form using his ki. The Saiyans needed to perform a ritual for Goku to transform into Super Saiyan. The theory claims that humans might also need some kind of ritual to unlock their untapped potential. If Akira Toriyama explored the ability more, the humans could have discovered a new transformation. Gohan leaving his training to focus on studies might be one of the reasons why the humans were not as powerful as the Saiyans.
Saiyans Were Always Preferred Over Humans

Saiyans are known to love fighting, and it helps them get stronger. Humans could also have reached such fame if the mangaka decided to go with Mystic Gohan. Chi-Chi is quite strong, compared to ordinary humans. Dragon Ball showcased her toughness and she was the one who taught Goten martial arts.
So, if humans could have access to their full potential, it could have posed a challenge to the Saiyan warriors. In Dragon Ball Super, Mystic Gohan was fighting with Super Saiyan Blue Goku without any problem. So, it could mean the Mystic form can challenge the God ki. The Androids were also human and were biologically engineered to have an energy core.

Even after becoming human, Android 17 and Android 18 were quite powerful. Unfortunately, it will never be revealed whether humans could have reached Saiyans’ level or even surpassed them. It will remain fan theory unless Toyotarou decides to explore the human side of the Dragon Ball franchise.
Dragon Ball can be streamed on Crunchyroll, and the manga is available on Viz Media.
