The 2024 Golden Globes have recently made announcements of all the projects and actors who have been nominated for their hard work and dedication this past year. Cinema in the year 2023 certainly did not disappoint. While it is fair to say that some projects did not meet the expectations of the audience, there were a lot more that exceeded them. From Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, to Leonardo DiCaprio’s Killers of the Flower Moon, and Emma Stone’s Poor Things, there were a lot of films that started a lot of conversations.
The spotlight was also shone on a lot of names that had not been heard before, helping them gain the recognition they so clearly deserved. With this, it is no surprise that there a quite a few nominees for the Golden Globes this year, who have not been nominated before. On this note, here are ten first-time nominees for this award, including Riverdale actor, Charles Melton, and Colman Domingo, who is rumored to take up the role of Kang in the MCU after Jonathan Majors’ departure.
10. Sandra Hüller
The German actress has been nominated in the category of Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for her work in Anatomy of a Fall. After having worked in cinema for over two decades in many languages, including German, Austrian, American, British, and French, this is her first time getting nominated for a Golden Globe. Playing the role of the protagonist in the thriller-crime film, she managed to steal the show through her performance as Sandra Voyter in the film.
9. Alma Pöysti
For her work in Fallen Leaves, Alma Pöysti has been nominated in the category of Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. She has been nominated alongside actresses like Margo Robbie for her work in Barbie, Emma Stone for Poor Things, and Jennifer Lawrence, making it no small achievement for the Finnish actress. The rom-com film directed by Aki Kaurismäki, received immense critical acclaim for its beauty, with many referring to it as a masterpiece.
8. Da’Vine Joy Randolph
Da’Vine Joy Randolph has been a part of several extremely well-known projects like The Lost City, High Fidelity, and Dolemite Is My Name, however, none have managed to get her a Golden Globe nomination. That was, until now. Starring in the 2023 comedy film, The Holdovers, the actress played the role of Mary Lamb and became the center of attention for many. So much so, that it earn her a nomination in the category of Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture
7. Greta Lee
Greta Lee has been rising through the ranks of Hollywood for quite some time, making a name for herself through projects like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Russian Doll, and Sisters. Through projects like this, she has established herself as a true talent. However, her work in Past Lives has helped her cross another milestone in her career. For her role as Nora, the actress was nominated for a Golden Globe in the category of Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama.
6. Charles Melton
Charles Melton has become quite the familiar face, playing a recurring character in Riverdale, however, after this series ended, the actor chose a completely different path for himself. Starring in May December alongside Natalie Portman, and Julianne Moore, the actor has completely redefined his career. So much so, that his role as Joe Yoo has earned him a Golden Globe nomination in the category of Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture.
5. Danielle Brooks
Danielle Brooks starred in Orange is the New Black and Peacemaker before making her way onto the cast of the adaptation of the Alice Walker classic, The Color Purple. Playing the role of Sofia, the actress impressed not only the audience but also the Golden Globes, also being nominated in the category of Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture.
4. Fantasia Barrino
Danielle Brooks is not the only person to be nominated for their work in The Color Purple as Fantasia Barrino also managed to give an excellent performance the Celie, the protagonist of the film. She has also been nominated in the category of Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
3. Lily Gladstone
Lily Gladstone was an integral part of Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, playing the role of Mollie Burkhart alongside dynamic presences like Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro. This was not an easy fete for her, however, the actress managed to give an exceptional and memorable performance. So much so, that she has also been nominated for a Golden Globe in the category of Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama.
2. Colman Domingo
Colman Domingo’s name is being whispered in the press for many different reasons. From his work that was released this past year, including The Color Purple and Rustin, or the rumors of him taking over the role of Kang from Jonathan Majors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Another topic of conversation can be added to the list as the actor has gained his first Golden Globes nomination. For his work in Rustin as Bayard Rustin, Domingo has been nominated in the category of Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama.

1. Cailee Spaeny
Cailee Spaeny’s nomination for a Golden Globe is no surprise. Her performance as Priscilla was exceptionally well done, with her having completely melted into the role. She managed to perfectly prove herself as a force to be reckoned with. She has also been nominated in the category of Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama.
