With its ensemble cast led by Keanu Reeves, the franchise has four movies so far. However, that is about to change soon if recent updates are anything to go by. While it is no secret that Reeves’ potential attachment to any project is enough for fans to get excited, this time around, that does not seem to be the case.

Keanu Reeves ventured into the film industry with the Canadian film Hangin’ In and had his Hollywood breakthrough with the sci-fi comedy Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. By 1994, he had established himself as an action hero with movies like Point Break and Speed.

This success was followed by some box-office bombs, but he gained stardom with his portrayal of Neo in 1999’s The Matrix. The movie, written and directed by the Wachowskis, sees humans trapped in a simulated reality run by machines. A computer programmer Thomas Anderson, better known as Neo, discovers the truth and rebels against the machines alongside a group of people freed from the matrix.

The Matrix‘s commercial and critical success spawned three sequels; the last of which, The Matrix Resurrections was released in 2021. While critics and audiences praised the first three movies of the franchise, the fourth one did comparatively worse. This led to disappointment among fans of the action-heavy movies.

Despite the poor reception of the last movie, a new movie is in the works. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Drew Goddard is writing and directing the upcoming Matrix movie. Warner Bros. has released a statement in support of the director. This will reportedly be the first movie in which the creators will not be directly involved.

Plot details of the new addition to the franchise are still under tight wraps. However, it has to be noted that given his track record, Drew Goddard might be the shining beacon of hope for the franchise.

The American screenwriter and director is well-known for his work on series like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lost. He is also well-known for his screenwriting for The Martian and World War Z. Not to mention, he is the creator of the beloved series Daredevil. Fans have expressed their hope in the movie as one of them wrote on X: “This gonna be peak.”

On the one hand, some fans are stoked about this new movie. On the other hand, people also seem skeptical about it and demanded that the franchise should be left alone. That being said, with the reins in Drew Goddard’s hands, the new movie will hopefully do better than the fourth installment of the franchise.
