Japanese director Hidetaka Miyazaki is responsible for several successful and critically acclaimed Soulslike games like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Elden Ring. The talent of FromSoftware has opened doors to partnerships and deals with major publishing companies like Sony and a few years ago, the two parties collaborated and brought the fan favorite Bloodborne, and fans are begging for a sequel.
Developing sequels is not a very popular option for Miyazaki. Bloodborne was a successful collaboration between FromSoftware and PlayStation and have moved forward with another exclusive project called Déraciné, a brand-new original title with a few splashes of the iconic FromSoftware atmosphere and eerie environments of Miyazaki.
The director’s creativity has sparked the curiosity of their players, and they believe that Déraciné was a nod for Bloodborne 2. However, that was never the case.
Fans Thought a Bloodborne 2 Was Coming After Hidetaka Miyazaki’s Déraciné
In a previous interview with GameInformer regarding the release of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Miyazaki was asked about how the teases from Déraciné have spiraled out of control and caused fans to believe a Bloodborne sequel was imminent due to the game’s nature.
You know, it wasn’t so much that they read too much into it, it was just supposed to be a little homage, but people kind of expected Bloodborne 2 and it kind of got a little bit crazy. So, we feel like we caused a great inconvenience to Sony, and that was really not our intention.
Passionate fans often tend to over-analyze things that may not hold much significance for the developers. While there may be some similarities between the details of Déraciné and Bloodborne, there is no concrete confirmation from FromSoftware that these games are set in the same universe, apart from the fact that they are both PlayStation and Sony exclusives.
Some fans have gone above and beyond by deciphering and analyzing details to bridge a connection between the two games.

The positive note that this misconception caused by references is that it allowed fans to be far more invested than game developers had anticipated. FromSoftware and Miyazaki may have jumped a little too far, but it is evident that the fans are welcome to the idea of a shared horror gaming universe.
Hidetaka Miyazaki’s Coincidental References Caused a Major Inconvenience for Sony
Hidetaka Miyazaki is a bold creative, despite not having any proper background in the virtual reality space of gaming but took on the challenge to create Déraciné which served as a learning experience. FromSoftware has full agency with their franchises and could do whatever they please, perhaps the studio can revisit the VR avenue with a more recent title like Elden Ring down the line.
It was clear that Hidetaka Miyazaki had no intention of causing hype from fans by teasing a Bloodborne sequel through Déraciné. There was no harm apart from Sony being pressured into potentially greenlighting the anticipated sequel, which wouldn’t be a bad thing but perhaps they are satisfied with how they left the project and give FromSoftware more room to create other worlds.
