This article of the Netflix series Griselda Season 1 Episode 1, “Lady Comes to Town,” contains spoilers.

Griselda’s first episode, “Lady Comes to Town,” is a brilliantly layered outing. First, the writing reveals why Griselda became the woman she is – one full of ambition. It also provides context for the character, stemming from the trauma of physical and sexual abuse. The show opens with a jaw-dropping quote from Pablo Escobar: “The only man I was ever afraid of was a woman named Griselda Blanco.”

She then rushes into her home, bleeding, and calls her friend in Miami, Carmen. While Carmen expects Griselda to complain about her husband, Alberto, Griselda skips that part and informs Carmen that she is coming to Miami with her three sons. Isabel is taken aback, mentioning that she only has one guest room. Nevertheless, Ms. Blanco shows up.

Carmen gives her a job as a secretary at the Coral Gables Travel Agency she owns, but Griselda is determined to earn her fortune by working nine to five. Meanwhile, Griselda has brought to the United States a brick of pure, Colombian-grade cocaine. She contacts an old friend, Arturo, who informs her about a club in Miami where she might be able to unload the illegal substance.

Netflix’s Griselda Season 1 Episode 1 Recap: Who is Amilcar?

According to the series, Rafael ‘Amilcar’ Rodriguez holds the position of drug kingpin in Miami, reportedly serving as inspiration for the Al Pacino film Scarface. Amilcar typically spends his nights at The Mutiny, a trendy downtown club. Griselda (Sofia Vergara) conducts reconnaissance, spotting an unsuspecting soldier named Johnny.

She deliberately spills a drink on him, leveraging her attractiveness to prompt Johnny to buy her a drink. Having set her hook, Blanco offers Johnny some of her high-grade drugs and inquires about Amilcar, seeking an introduction to selling her product to him. Despite Johnny’s dismissive remarks, he walks her over.

Recognizing that Johnny is insignificant to Amilcar and his muscle Rivi takes only two seconds. She senses this and instructs Johnny to leave. However, Amilcar rejects her offer. His machismo prevents him from dealing with a woman as an equal, and he dismisses her product as insignificant for wholesale deals.

Disheartened, Ms. Blanco leaves, only to encounter Johnny holding her up by the trunk of her car. He steals the brick at gunpoint.

How does Griselda get her cocaine back from Johnny?

Griselda trails Johnny and observes him attempting to unload her brick for a local buyer outside of Amilcar’s network. When Johnny goes to the trunk of his car, she hits him with a baseball bat and reclaims the cocaine. She informs him that he will introduce her to the local buyer, or she will expose Johnny’s activities to Amilcar.

At a local coffee shop, she meets Chucho, a Colombian man around her age, and pays him to act as her bodyguard despite his lack of experience. She also asks him to open doors for her, enhancing her appearance of importance. Griselda provides him with a gun. Together, they enter the bar and head to the backroom to meet Eddie.

Blanco showcases her sharpness, seamlessly transitioning between charming and calculating businesswoman. An agreement is reached on the price when sudden screams erupt from the bar. A bodyguard is pushed through the door with a machete in his head. The sicario shoots Eddie, Johnny, and two others with guns. She hides while Chucho shoots the assailant multiple times until he falls dead on top of him.

Rivi then enters, whistling. He tells Ms. Blanco to go home and takes the cocaine.

Griselda Season 1 Episode 1 Ending Explained:  Why did Griselda kill her husband?

In a flashback, Ms. Blanco shoots her husband after he proposes her sleeping with his brother to settle his debt. Despite complying unhappily, when she later finds Alberto and he becomes jealous, questioning her enjoyment, she is disgusted.

Griselda informs him of her decision to leave, emphasizing that they are partners and he is a burden. Alberto claims she only had one idea (apparently a smuggling plan) and bids her good riddance, mocking her chances without him. Unfazed, Blanco pulls out her gun and kills Alberto’s bodyguard.

Griselda ends with her returning to The Mutiny, covered in blood. Blanco tries her cocaine and commends its quality. Blanco reveals her experience moving cocaine from Medellin to New York City for ten years. As Amilcar takes over Eddie’s territory, he agrees to use her as his supplier, provided she doubles the shipment next month.
