Looking to break the norm, Rockstar Games is seeking to make waves, as it has the chance to show a game world like GTA through a different lens. It also appears that passing comments from NPC’s will likely differ drastically to those of previous GTA games and their male protagonists.
Lucia: How Will GTA 6’s Protagonist View The World?
As we now all know, Grand Theft Auto 6 will introduce the franchise’s first female protagonist with Lucia, and it’s going to be interesting to see how playing as her is going to change the experience compared to previous entries in the ever popular series.
Given the fact that Rockstar has always tried to make the GTA games as close to real life as possible, it’s highly likely we will see Lucia deal with catcalls, passing comments from NPC’s about certain aspects of her appearance, and other situations the previous male protagonists wouldn’t have come across. This lends an entirely new perspective that is rarely shown in video games of any kind.
Given that all previous GTA protagonists have been male up until now, it’s going to be very interesting to see what Rockstar comes up with to show the difference of experience for women compared to men, to reflect the very real issues women face every day.
They say there’s a first time for everything, and those at Rockstar are certainly not strangers to being the first to do something game changing (pun intended). So as the world eagerly awaits the next installment in the ever popular GTA franchise, we look forward to seeing what’s to come from the gaming giants.
A Change to the GTA Formula Is Better Late Than Never
For almost 30 years, Grand Theft Auto has had male protagonists as is the case with a vast amount of video games, so it’s always fresh to see a female protagonist take the centre stage in such a big title. It’s rare to see a large franchise do something like this.
One could speculate that characters such as Lara Croft in Tomb Raider and Aloy from the Horizon games have influenced this choice as both very strong female heroes at the centre of their respective franchises. Rockstar may have seen this as a chance to give players another female protagonist to carry their own game.
This can be seen as a sort reinvention for the GTA franchise as Rockstar looks set to bring a whole new experience for players with Lucia. It’s safe to say it’s about time gamers got a new female protagonist to offset the abundance of male leading characters. It will not only open the door to a potentially new audience, but can provide fresh takes and a whole new outlook for the existing fan base that has become so used to male main characters.
Overall, I think it’s safe to say Rockstar will impress with GTA 6 and how the game represents its female protagonist. The studio has never been one to shy away from the more risky topics, and lesser shown sides of the world, especially in its GTA franchise. Although 2025 seems like a long wait, if there’s one thing that’s for certain, Rockstar will make the wait worth it.
