After decades of waiting, MCU’s Adam Warlock is finally making his movie debut through Will Poulter. However, in classic Marvel fashion, the actor initially did not even know whom he was going to play in his first Marvel movie. The studio has a history of drip-feeding information to their actors to keep things from getting spoiled beforehand.

A very well-known example of this is obviously Tom Holland, who had been kept from learning the details of the Marvel movies he has appeared in as the actor has a habit of inadvertently spoiling things in interviews. Not only that but his co-stars have often been spotted trying to contain his excitement so as not to spoil the things he had been privy to.

As a result, Will Poulter who is stepping into completely uncharted territory when it comes to Marvel being kept in the dark is not exactly shocking to fans.

Will Poulter wasn’t aware he will become Adam Warlock

The genetically engineered superhero Adam Warlock first made his appearance in Fantastic Four comics back in the 1980s. After that, the intergalactic superhero has made numerous appearances throughout history and franchises to come to the aid of other cosmic protectors over the years. He especially played a part in the Infinity Stone saga in the comics mainly because he possesses the Soul Stone on his forehead.

As a result, fans were excited to see him make an appearance in the movies during that time, especially as his character was teased at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. However, it is only now, in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 that people will finally get to witness him in person on the big screen.

As a result, the excitement is out of this world. Will Poulter, too, seems extremely enthusiastic to portray such an important role in the franchise.

However, what made an impression on him before even joining the studio was how he wasn’t aware of which character he was auditioning for. Poulter commented on this in an interview saying,

“When I first auditioned for Adam and sent in a tape, I really didn’t even know who I was auditioning for. I was auditioning for an untitled character, so that was confusing but eventually, I was drip-fed the information about the being I was trying to portray.”

Thankfully this absolutely did not impact his audition and things went over pretty smoothly. Will Poulter also explained that he knew that his character was teased at the end of the second Guardians of the Galaxy movie, but it was only later that he found out the rich history Adam Warlock personifies in the comic books.

Will Poulter maintained extreme diets to get the perfect superhero body

Actors are known for having to go through extreme transformations for their characters. And a franchise as vivid as MCU’s obviously required the same dedication. For example, Chris Hemsworth had to go through extreme training and even binge-eating for his role as Thor in the movies. Even Scarlett Johansson mentioned the extreme weightlifting she did for years to keep up her Black Widow physique.

And now, Marvel newbie Will Poulter, too, mentioned the extreme lengths he endured for his role in the movie. He noted in a recent interview how difficult it is to talk about anything Marvel related because of how secretive everything is. However, he explained that when it came to diet regimes,

“The most important thing is that your mental and physical health has to be number one, and the aesthetic goals have to be secondary, otherwise you end up promoting something that is unhealthy and unrealistic if you don’t have the financial backing of a studio paying for your meals and training.”

He also acknowledged the advantage he has saying, “I’m in a very privileged position in that respect, and I wouldn’t recommend anyone do what I did to get ready for that job.”

Thankfully for him, he is now at a maintenance phase where he neither needs to starve nor stuff himself full of food and just check his weight and physique through a healthy diet and exercise routine.

Although his training certainly took a toll on him, it seems he is extremely excited to finally see the audience’s reaction to his debut on screen this month. And after years of waiting, it seems the fans too are holding their breath to witness his performance as the titular superhero for the first time.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 releases on May 5th, 2023 in theaters.
