Creative Assembly, the studio behind the critically acclaimed Total War series, is reportedly expanding its horizons by venturing into the iconic Star Wars universe. According to recent reports, the studio is developing not one, but three Total War games set in the galaxy far, far away.
Creative Assembly, known for its diligent attention to historical detail and grand-scale battles, has previously explored ancient Egypt (Total War: Pharaoh) and the fantastical realms of Total War: Warhammer. After the rumour about Total War: Star Wars, fans of both strategic warfare and epic space opera are eagerly awaiting this unprecedented crossover.
Future alliance between Creative Assembly and Star Wars
Creative Assembly created Total War: Pharaoh last year, which explored ancient Egypt. But with the recent reports, it is speculated that Creative Assembly is back to fantasy stories with Star Wars in mind. Total Wars: Star Wars is reportedly the second game among the three new games currently in development by Total Wars.
The development cycle of Creative Assembly remains shrouded in mystery, leaving fans to engage in speculation about the game’s release. But it is anticipated that Star Wars games will likely be released within the next couple of years.
Right now, Creative Assemble is fully focused on Total Wars: Pharoh and looking to expand the size of the campaign map. The studio also mentioned in their blog post that there will be over 80 new units for the Mesopotamian factions alongside over 70 reworked units from a Total War Saga: TROY.
Creative Assembly’s recent challenges
Creative Assembly hasn’t had an entirely smooth journey. The recent announcement by Sega to cancel Hyenas, developed by Creative Assembly, has left a bad taste in their mouth. The project was announced in 2022 and was supposedly the Sega’s highest-budget game but after several alpha tests in 2023, Sega didn’t find much profitability potential in the game and cancelled it on September 2023.
This was a major setback for Creative Assembly. However, the decision to focus back on strategy games aligns with the studio’s strengths and they can bounce back. A Star Wars version could be the boost Creative Assembly needs to regain its footing and win over fans once again.
The plans to improve the level of transparency with players in the latest blog post show that Creative Assembly is focused and ready to create some magic. As players await official announcements for Total Wars: Star Wars, Creative Assembly continues to fine-tune Total War: Pharaoh with a free update that expands the campaign map and introduces fresh factions.
