Warner Bros. and WarnerMedia plan to make HBO Max the greatest streaming service. They’ve already greenlit a great number of TV series for the streamer, which are set in the DC Universe and several other franchises. But we’ve been wondering as to how they are going to use their beloved Harry Potter IP for HBO Max. Well, The Hollywood Reporter has answered this question for us as a live-action Harry Potter series is set to go under development for the streaming service very soon.
According to THR’s sources, “the WarnerMedia-backed streamer have engaged in multiple conversations with potential writers exploring various ideas that would bring the beloved property to television.” As of now, only a few ideas have been discussed, and the project is currently in the very early stages of development. The execs at Warner Bros. and HBO Max are currently engaged in a bunch of pitch meetings as they haven’t locked a writer just yet.
WB and HBO Max told THR that “There are no Harry Potter series in development at the studio or on the streaming platform,” as they have only discussed a few ideas. But this is Hollywood. In this industry, one thing leads to another and boom! We’ve got a new fan-favorite TV show in the making. With Warner Bros. exploring a prequel franchise with Fantastic Beasts, it only made sense for them to use Harry Potter’s branding to expand the universe and help their streaming service grow.
As we’ve mentioned, only a few conversations have happened at the executive level, so it is impossible to know the narrative that the eventual series will follow. But it will be interesting to see the role that J.K. Rowling will play in the development, especially after she was involved in a few franchise-related controversies last year. Anyway, we’re extremely happy that Warners and HBO Max are finally working out a project set in this magical world of wizardry. Harry Potter is one of their most profitable franchises, having grossed over $7 billion at the worldwide box office. So, something related to the property was always on the cards.
With the series format, HBO Max could tell unique universe building stories and take the universe forward instead of rebooting it. But considering that the upcoming project hasn’t even begun development technically, we shouldn’t expect the show to arrive any time before late 2022, or 2023.
